A quick question:

Whats the differnce between a .zip file and a .rar file.

They're both zips, right?

:?

(Supplementary question: what sort of file has the extension .tar.gz ?)

.tar.gz = linux "zip" format...

.zip and .rar are the same type of thing essentially - compressed files. They're both compressed in different ways, and you'll find one file type might be smaller then the other.

.zip is widely opened using WinZip, and .rar using WinRAR.

If you get hold of WinRAR, it opens zips, rars and tar.gzs...

The third commonest format is ".ACE" and WinACE can open ACE, RAR & ZIP files (WinRAR can't open ACE files if I remember correctly.) As has been the case with ZIP files (invented by Phil Katz - the program used to be called "PKZIP", back in DOS days. Sadly, he drank himself to death not long back, while still quite a young man) they keep on bringing out new versions... and files created with new versions require new versions of WinRAR, WinZIP or WinACE to open them. So, don't assume that because you've got version 2.2 or WinRAR that it WILL open any RAR file - if it was created with WInRAR 3.0 (the latest) it won't. The good news is that (a) it's time-limited shareware and (;) lifetime upgrades to the registered version are free. If you're passing on ZIP, RAR or ACE files, it's always a good idea to turn them into self-extractors first. The ZIP extension turns to .EXE, and if you double-click the file, it unpacks itself without needing any additional software of ANY version.

WinRAR 3.11 CAN open ACE files if compressed correctly. WinACE used to do some screwy things in its compression algorythm but they've been fixed now (I believe).

Personally I'd just recommend WinRAR, it can open every compression I've ever come across, it compreeses equal to if not better than WinZIP, its cheaper and it has file recovery features.
