A word of warning! After trying this and rebooting, my phone became cert locked again  and on checking the files where back in the startup folder again.

After de-certing way back in the old days and surviving the update without having to de-cert again I was somewhat miffed with this!!!

Not wanting to hard reset and have to put everything back again I thought I would try the OTA method. WOW first time and in about a minute ;)

Not sure if it was just bad luck on my part, but I don't think I will try this again...

I've very curious as to what these programs actually do... so I wont muffle around with it until you 'guinea pigs' are done with testing *innocent blink*!

So keep the info coming =) I want a faster phone ...

Paul, perhaps you would know, or know someone in a position of technical intimacy with the SPV who could clear this up once and for all. By the looks of it there is no real harm in deleting these shortcuts but I'd feel better to know what they did before I removed them. I'd rather not have that dog turn round and bite me on the backside in the future.

My phone crashed this morning (thanks Activesync!) so I was forced to re-boot.

It still seems to be unlocked (tried Task Manager, Bubblets and Speaking Clock which I assume are all uncert) and the shortcuts have not come back.

Can't explain what happened to you JonnyB.

Weird...

All I did was move the entire contents of IPSM/Windows/StartUp (except SmartFaceMgr shortcut) to my PC via ActiveSync. Powered down and restarted the phone (keen to see any speed improvements). This took the normal amount of time but on completion the phone had reverted back to the default orange home screen and you've guessed it, on checking all the unsigned app’s failed to run.

I am guessing the registry must have gotten screwed somehow and a default was restored, whether this was down to moving the files or just coincidence who knows.....

For the time being I am going to leave the StartUp files alone.

I would assume that this will be something to do with the backlight which is most probably an Electro Luminescent (EL) panel! ;)

I recently signed up to "The guinea pig team" and can proudly say that removing the whole lot has had no negative effects so far. Not sure as to how better it became but all works fine. Including new contacts and inserting no's, EL switches off ok, no recert, gprs/email work and so on.. MMS - don't use.

COLDINIT - isn't it only supposed to run during 1st boot?? Registering the provisional files that is...

madu. tried a sudden power off? (ie removing battery while phone on?)

I see most of the effects of these files are in checking/repropagating services, or files. to ensure the phone runs.

Let us know how you get on.

Weird. Removed the startup files and no go with GPRS. Put them back and GPRS worked, also have full signal now and MUCH faster finding the Orange signal. Weird...

Will play with them when I'm NOT at work (Weekend)

will do some benchmarking in a bit... just let me change the homescreen to something better than I have now and add the new alarm plugin to it.... to be continued..
