Guest fixit Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I'm on my third SPV now, and having dropped the second (the first died of natural causes) I thought I'd start using the horrible protective case you get with it. I've been doing this, and for the first time I've had a problem with dust under the screen - the other two phones that rattled around in my lint infested pockets were fine. If I look at the inside of the black case the fuzzy lining is coming off - it looks like the fur of a particularly old and scabby cat. So I wonder - is this lining the small particles I'm seeing under the screen? And what about anyone else? Is there a correlation between case users and the dust under the screen problem? You can tell I'm bored, posting topics like this..... [EDIT:madu] Correlation you say?? How about some poll number? (I'm bored too!)
Guest clv101 Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I ha dust in my 1st one, and not the 2nd. I've never used the case. The probem with the 1st one was that the plastic cover of the screen was loose, I could get my finger nail under it!! It's just poor build quality, poor glue to fix plastic over on to the front of the phone.
Guest fraser Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Same here. I'm on my second phone, never used the case. The first got quite bad (but got replaced because of another problem) and my second is building a nice collection of dead skin (dust) underneath the screen. The first phone had all the dust at the bottom of the screen, while this one has it at the top.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I've used the case since November, day in day out and never had a problem so it's not that then poor build quality :?
Guest Dylan Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Mine's got some dust but not much. Never used the case, it makes it a bit too bulky for my liking. It's the scratches on the screen that really bother me though! Oh well, my own fault really.
Guest skimask Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I've had mine for 3 months, always used the case, no problems with dust. Only complaint I've got with the case is that when my phone rings, and I have keypad lock on, it still sometimes cancels the call when I try to get the phone out of the case.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I took mine to pieces to clear the dust, and noticed some of the lining had shifted...
Guest Richie M Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Had it since November, never used the case and i've got about 3 bits of dust in it, and they have only appeared over the last month :?
Guest spacemonkey Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I've had mine since they came out, never used the case, took it around filthy old egypt for 2 weeks, absolutely no dust. I'd say it's gonna be a case of whether you're lucky enough to get one with the seal properly in place around the screen or not.
Guest Vector Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I've had mine since december and had no dust at all ;)
Guest HelloDave Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 SPV 1 - no dust SPV 2 - dust reached the point of obscuring the screen SPV 3 - no dust (yet) Seems to vary, and be down to luck whether your phone is well built or not! ;)
Guest pjh Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 had my spv since december haven't got any dust.....just one big bit of scum i have no idea how it could of got in there! :?
Guest NederSoren Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Had my SPV since october, haven't seen any dust yet... No case btw.. ;)
Guest Gorskar Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Lucky you. My SPV (January) has a little bit of dust and a hair near the top left of the screen. Someday I'll clean it out, when I can bring myself to pull it apart.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 Had my SPV since october How? :? or did you get a pre-release?
Guest Thurstan Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 SPV 1 - Never used case - No dust (only lasted 1 week) SPV 2 - Never used case - Dustier than a home for retired zombies and returned due to that problem SPV 3 - Used case for first 2 months but not for last 2 - No dust (but is likely to go back today because it's getting 'stuck in headset' every 5 seconds.
Guest NederSoren Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 Awarner Lol That was spose to say november!! ;) hehe Nope no pre-release..
Guest fixit Posted May 1, 2003 Report Posted May 1, 2003 Interesting, Mr Bond..... Of the people who don't use the case, 51% have dust, 49% don't so it's a rough 50/50 split. Of the people who use the case, 72% have dust and 28% don't so that's over two in three case users with a dust problem. Surely logic dictates that phones in cases should be less susceptible to dust settling on/permeating them? Admittedly we haven't gone for a huge sample group, but it's an odd trend! Right - really must do some work now.
Guest Groatsey Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 I had a tiny fly/crawly thing under my screen a while back. It used to dance about when I phoned it in vibrate mode. It just slid about for a short while after that and now its gone. ANYONE ELSE had anything like this? I'm not sure if it ate some of the dust as there does seem to be less or maybe that's just wishful thinking.
Guest fraser Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 There was a case when someones iBook got an ant infestation. It's discussed here on Slashdot, but the original article is no longer on the Apple website. Maybe we can train some small insects to eat all the dust for us!!
Guest Groatsey Posted May 9, 2003 Report Posted May 9, 2003 Microsoft Press Release: NEW FEATURE FOR SMARTPHONE 2002 Microscoff comes to the aid of the Microsoft Smartphone. Microsoft today announced a new partnership with a new micro solutions provider Microscoff. At a mere (250 to 300 microns) in length the solution is completely antennaeless, the body is translucent and features a grabbing mouthpiece. Buzz Casey, Head of Smartphone development team: "This is our most innovative solution to date. Since the launch of our new Smartphone we have been beleaguered with the dust under the screen issue." Microscoff dust mites came to the rescue with the much welcomed solution. The dust mites simply crawl down the Smartphone gap of their choice and take up residence. The regular supply of food (dust) means that this is a lifetime solution (for the dust mites). Clearing of the dust is initiated by music, ringtones and vibration alerts. Buzz Bush continued: "Initially it sounded a bit far fetched, however, we have given this practical solution our full support and are now looking for other ways of exploiting these valued dust mites." Guest rpenhale Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I got my phone in December, and it has dust under the screen although I keep it in the case. I don't have Orange care but surely this could be described as a fault under the normal 12 month warranty. Can I get this sorted for free? I bought the phone from Orange's telephone order line
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 You should be able to, but as you don't have care you could be without your phone for about two weeks :)
Guest Jimi_A Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 I answer no dust - cased. But I don't use the supplied case, that just rubbish. I have a conventional veritcal leather case with belt clip. Works very well, esp with the large plastic window. I was wondering could the wierd trend as metioned by, fixit "Of the people who don't use the case, 51% have dust, 49% don't so it's a rough 50/50 split. Of the people who use the case, 72% have dust and 28% don't so that's over two in three case users with a dust problem. Surely logic dictates that phones in cases should be less susceptible to dust settling on/permeating them? Admittedly we haven't gone for a huge sample group, but it's an odd trend!" could be down to the fact that people might use other cases than the original, more as a way of stopping the screen / case geting scratched, and perhaps put them in dusty coat / trouser pockets?
