We do not need MS - says Siemens

The most known reason, mentioned by many journalists, why MS cannot succeed in cell phone industry seems to be "because cell phones are personal devices, not like PCs". Now Siemens reiterates this reason:

This philosophy is far different from that of Microsoft's with its Windows CE-based Smartphone 2002, which gives all Windows-based smartphones the same MMI look and feel, and emphasises similarity to a PC, with mobile versions of Internet Explorer, Outlook and Word. [...] "There's a big difference compared with a PC, and that is that a PC has never been a personal device," he said. "Unlike a phone, you do not carry your laptop around with you everywhere you go. People use their mobile phone not only for business, but for different things in their daily lives." ...

"cell phones are personal devices, not like Personal Computers"

What a load of bollocks.

Discuss.

That just reminded me of...

"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." Thomas Watson, IBM 1943.

At least Watson said that in the forties.

Exactly.

Things are the way they are, they will never change!

So, what, is he saying I'll always get better personalisation by picking the cellphone (that I can't change) that most matches my "personality", rather than the alternative of getting a Smartphone 2002 cellphone in a nice form factor (flip or not flip) and then customising every detail specifically to me.

But then, press releases are always this kind of biased.

What the f**k are siemens talking about?!

How is a personal computer not a personal device?! they seem to be getting the word portable and personal confused!

I use my computer for things other than business, in fact it's the hub for my entertainment (music, video, web, games etc...) and business.

The good thing about the Smartphone OS is that it a mini PC! The familiarity is usefull and so is the ability to take elements of your desktop with you on the move! I'd go mad without having a mp3/DivX player one the move!

 You mean, its a phone as well as a mini PC - well you learn something new everyday

The personalisation on the SPV etc is miles ahead of anything else I've seen. Just goes to show that XML does have its uses ;)

Thats such a shame,

because if Siemens did release a smartphone it would have a build quality an order of magintude better than HTC.

(i still miss the aluminium covers on the SL45i)

:?

its a put down, usual corporate bollards to put down the competition.

it's actually a contradiction....

People use their mobile phone not only for business, but for different things in their daily lives

isnt that the whole point of smartphone? it isnt just a mobile phone for business, it can be used for so much more (including tunes, games and movies to name but a few)

i think they need to get with the program
