Could anyone tell me how you can surf using the SPV on a normal 0845 number. This would allow me to make use of my every day 50 package ;)

Welcome to the site ;)

And the answer is...you can't :)

But you can use the phone as a modem for the PC if you are running

Win 2000 or XP.

You CAN connect via normal CSD dial-up on the phone itself, instead of that nasty expensive GPRS (I didn't get the access pack ;)) In Settings/Data Connections go Menu/Edit Connections/Dial-Up and Add - enter the usual ISP info here. Select this as the Internet Connection and this is what Internet Explorer/MSN Messenger will use by default when you connect.

I have been doing this successfully for the last couple of days, 50 free mins then 1p/min thereafter data calls cannot be beaten. You should try to find an 01- or 02- geographical number for your ISP though, I'm not sure if 0845 is 1p/min offpeak.

Now, getting the phone itself to work as a USB or IR modem with a PC running Win98, that's not so easy. :|

Dialups will be registered as data calls and not voice calls, are you sure this is included in you 50 free minutes ? When is you next bill due ?

Personally, I don't know too much about the tarrif but I would definately make sure its included before going Internet mad.

I'm pretty sure (since I too have managed to hang on to ED50) that 0845's are not taken out of bundled minutes, although 0870's are ;) So you either need to find a geographical number for the ISP or do a web trawl for someone that has set up an 0870 re-director to an ISP. Quite a few people did it in the early days of ED50 but I don't know if they are still around. Alternatively, get an 0870 number and do it yourself :)

0845 numbers are charged at 10p a minute, so you need to fine a geographic number for your ISP in order to use your bundled minutes and get the 1p a minute off-peak deal.

If your ISP does not have a geographic 01 number, you can sign up for a new ISP that does. I used to use Virgin on an 01483 number, but I am sorry that I can't find the full number anywhere!

Good luck.

Yes, data calls (to the appropriate numbers) are definitely taken from the inclusive minutes as well as at 1p/min thereafter, as has been the case for 2+ years. I suppose Orange could now decide to bill me differently now I'm using an SPV (I'm sure they'd come up with a reason that was "logical" to them), but they can't actually tell what device is making the call.

This number is still going strong and is exactly what I use - 01483 881766.

I wonder if the "Evenings and Weekends" or "Late night and weekends" packs can be used for data calls? At £16 each, 1000 and 2000 mins respectively, they would be quite good value. Does anyone know?

I thought ED50 was the odd tariff that DOES include 0845 calls in your inclusive mins. It certainly used to when I had it back in the day.

I used to use a btopenworld geographic number for data, as you could carry on using that at 1p/min after the inclusive time had run out.

ED50 does take 0845/0645 out of inclusive minutes.

Have now been surfin using everyday 50 :) I have an 0845 number. This means I get 50 free mins of surfin per night. :( The connection was config'ed as a normal dialup connection - be carefull about dialing codes. Your country code needs to be 44 and you must leav out the leading zero of you STD code (ie 44 845) :D

Happy surfing
