What does this message mean....please!

I know there is a great deal of knowledge and expertise out there...and a lot of generous people who will help. So could someone please explain exactly what this means and how I resolve it....PLEASE!!

"You have been directed to this web page because your server (or your ISP's server) at IP address 195.92.137.107 is running a dangerously unsecured software proxy package, and because bulk e-mailers have been using this proxy to send out massive amounts of unsolicited bulk e-mail, thus annoying large numbers of Internet users.

Because you or your ISP have been lax about this particular security issue, and because your organization (or your ISP) has been allowing bulk junk e-mail to be sent out via your proxy, our site and other Internet sites have elected to block all further incoming e-mail from 195.92.137.107, at least until you fix the proxy security problem."

I had 2 emails bounced back to me giving me a url where the above message was displayed! I am not a spammer and have never spammed so I'm not really sure what has happened

Er...Freeserve are running an open proxy or mailserver? Doubt it...

Monolithix - If you are certain that Freeserve aren't - and I can assure you I am not running a proxy server at all - then why have AOL completely banned emails from that IP address?

If it is any help, I have since learnt that the IP address mentioned is actually Freeserve's SMTP Server :?

Which means they're running an open mailserver, or blackhole. Which i doubt. I don't have a freeserve account to test though...

Your best bet is to try connecting to the internet with another ISP and see if you can still send e-mail through the FS SMTP server.

Oh and btw, BT's routing between the AOL network is a tad screwy...

If anyone else knows what's going on here and can help in anyway with some kind of testing of the situation I would really appreciate it.

Freeserve just haven't got a clue and have denied all knowledge of what the problem might be - they wont even admit it's their SMTP Server!

All they have offered is that MY computer has been hacked into because I've probably used K*Z*A and that spammers are using MY computer to send out mass mailings! :? SHEESH!!! and that's the limit of their technical support

Any help and guidance greatly received guys ;)

AOL have incorporated a controversial system to block what they consider as SPAM Mail from ever reaching their users, and it seems like this software is preventing your e-mail from getting through. If I were you i'd contact AOL for assistance.

If it was *ONLY* AOL I wouldn't be so worried, but I sent an email to a customer who works for the Canadian Army at @forces.gc.ca and they bounced it back with the message I started of this thread with.

I think the problem is bigger than screwy old AOL

Open a command prompt and try typing the following:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

And see if you still get the problem...

smtp.freeserve.co.uk resolves to 195.92.193.153 for me btw...so renewing your own IP may help...

Thanks Mono - but how do I renew my own IP please? ;)

Guest Monolithix [MVP]

By performing those commands at a command prompt! ;)

Click Start > Run... > command

Then type the commands and hit enter after each.

Hhmmmm

Windows IP Configuration

"The operation failed as no adaptor is in the state permissible for the operation"

????

ok then. try start>run>winipcfg and release/renew using that (change it to whatever you use to access the internet first I'd imagine)

Or reboot your modem. No guarenty this will renew your IP though... :/

One quick "workaround" that could work (hey I'm not only a former Orange 156 techie, but also a former AOL techie!) is to sign up with softhome.net. Like Orange mail, they offer a free POP3 email service (funded by a small amount of spam mail) but they ALSO offer an AOL (and others) workaround - which is to change the port from 25 to 25000. (Easy illustrated instructions on how to do this in most common email clients can be found at www.softhome.net - click the "support" tag, and click outlook, Netscape... or whatever you use.) As someone already commented, it's not uncommon for ISP's to refuse to accept mail via other SMTP servers. AOL simply doesn't like your sending mail from Freeserve to whoever via them. Note also that AOL used to (and AFAIK) still does use IMAP mail (like Hotmail) whereas almost everyone else uses POP3.

Whatever... TRY softhome.net out, using THEIR SMTP and POP addressess (mail.softhome.net) and the 25000 port. I firmly believe that'll fix it. Means your email address will change (to [email protected]) but... if it works, that's better than keeping one that doesn't. In my judgement, it's an SMTP address problem. Mail me if you need more info (I've met this problem before) although you should find all you need (in plain ENglish - no jargon!) at softhome's site.

And that's why I love this site so much!

I just knew there was an answer out there like Big Ron's answer :) Thanks Big Ron (and thanks to everyone else that took the time to reply)

That was a very useful site that you gave me to look at, but I do need to send business emails that have to appear they came from my business name - and by the looks of the info on the site they don't allow you to spoof the "from" address when sending an email

I think I am going to bite the bullet and pay for an email account from my hosting company as it will give me much more control...and mean I don't have to put up with crappy Freeserves SMTP server!

Anyone got any experience of paying for their email account? Any advice to offer?

I repeat... try Softhome.net! they do both "free" POP3 and "pay" Free is limited to a per-month maximum (but is quite generous). They offer good support, AND workarounds for "spoofing" AOL and the like. Plus you can have as many different a/cs (each with their own address) as you want. My ISP ("08002go") went broke at four hours notice, and with it went my email address. I vowed NEVER again to use the same email provider as my ISP... and since then I've switched ISP three times, and kept the SAME email address. That address is softhome.net You can join the dots yourself - if I don't get the service I'm looking for from my ISP, I quit them without looking back. Yet I'm still with the same email provider.
