Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 3, 2003 Report Posted May 3, 2003 Programs > Settings > Telephony > Band Selection > PCS band ;)
Guest jaimiemalone Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Thanks, I had that part on GSM....what ab. de-certify? WHat is that and how do I know if that is done already to the phone? Is there anything else I need to do? Should it work now just by placing a SIM card in it? :?:
Guest caio1 Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Just download the "Torch" application (or any other non certified app) from here http://www.coolsmartphone.com/ (it's on the left), put it in ispmwindowsstart menuaccessories with activesync and try to launch it. If it works then your spv is de-certed. Caio
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 The Orange mobile carrier over here decided to put an application lock on the SPV. This means you can't run any applications that haven't been signed with a security certificate to say they have been checked that they are reliable and secure. Unfotunately applications signing is an expensive process so "bedroom" developers of freeware apps can not afford to get their work signed. De-certifying your phone will allow you to run any applications you like on your phone (see my site in my sig for a full list of all current freeware apps). To decertify your phone go to http://www.developers.orange.com/workingwi...3/04/Unlocking/ and follow the instructions there. You need to have either GPRS active on your account or pass through connection through your PC and Activesync.
Guest jaimiemalone Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Thanks although I am still confused. I thought the phone had to be set to GSM not PCS as stated int he earlier post. I went to Cingular (my local GSM carrier) yesterday and the phone would not recognize their SIM card or was this b/c the setting was wrong? Can you walk me through the exact process of setting this up to work here in the US? The ohone has been unlocked I am assured by the previuos owner in the UK. I am so frustarated rt. now that I spent all of this money on this phone and can not get it to work...please help!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Your best bet is to try both band settings, rebooting after each and finding out which works.
Guest jaimiemalone Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 when you say reboot you mean just turning the phone off and then back on?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Yep sorry ;) Just a simple power cycle...
Guest martin Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Originally called GSM900 and DCS1800, these are now called GSM900 and GSM1800. I suspect the PCS is for 1900MHz. It may be a case of swapping between the two GSM frequencies & PCS (hence tri-band). The situation gets worse as you now have 850MHz on Cingular which the SPV does not support. There's all sorts of roaming agreements established between the US networks and you should have plenty of coverage with GSM alone, in theory anyway. If you don't get anywhere, send a personal message to McHale as I think he's a telecoms engineer for Cingular. He'll know about Cingular network access and roaming issues with SPV, but expect an answer of biblical proportions. ;)
Guest jaimiemalone Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Martin, SO do you think it will not wk. w/ Cingular? WHy is the phone not recognizing the Cingular sim card? I have no other choices around me for GSM as we are so behind on that compared to the rest of the world. But I know that people in the US have these phones. Any other tips on getting the phone to actually work would be appreciated! Thanks
Guest martin Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 I know that people are using the SPV on AT&T and T-mobile without problems, I think your the first that I've heard of who is using a Cingular SIM, so I don't know. Is it thowing up any errors when you boot up with the SIM card or is it just that it won't show any operator on the front of the phone with either GSM or PCS selected ?
Guest martin Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 Does anything happen if you change Settings-Telephony-Networks to manual.
Guest jaimiemalone Posted May 4, 2003 Report Posted May 4, 2003 I now have to wait to go back to Cingular tomorrow when they open again as they ahve the actual card b/c I have not signed up w/ them until I know it works. No it just won't show the carrier or give a signal. I will try setting it to PCS and then try mannual if that doesn't do it. ANy other suggestions? Thanks
Guest martin Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 I would get hold of someones T-mobile or AT&T SIM and make sure the phone works with either of these.
Guest jaimiemalone Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Thanks for your help- it was simple it was in fact the settings that needed to be changed! I am now on Cingular in NC!
