Guest Tyrant_worm Posted May 3, 2003 Report Posted May 3, 2003 Wasn't too sure where to place this thread, however - If you are having problems with the Answerphone icon/Message Waiting Indicator not lifting from your handset when you have deleted all messages from your Voice Mailbox you might want to try this. Afer encountering this problem myself I have done a little testing It seems that the icon will not lift from the phone if you end the call to the Answerphone when hearing "you have no more messages", if you either end the call immediately that " message deleted" is heard or maintain the call to the Answerphone for around 10 secs after deletion the Icon will lift. I can only guess as to cause but the likelyhood is, as the Icon lift is actually an SMS the ending of the call takes down the channel the SMS is trying to be delivered over (SACCH) and for some reason the network doesn't know the handset has not received. If the call is ended immediately "message deleted" is heard the the SACCH(which is only available when you are on a call ) is taken down before the Icon lift is attempted and SMS will then use the channel available to it when handset is not on call(SDCCH) and message lifts. If you remain on the call until the Icon has lifted then obviously SACCH is available to use. As I say, cause is conjecture but I do have a reasonable idea how GSM works(Comms Engineer). Hope this helps anyone infuriated as I was. ;)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 3, 2003 Report Posted May 3, 2003 To quote Neil Enns from Microsoft: The message that Orange sends to clear the voicemail indicator didn't arrive at the phone so the icon isn't cleared. You can either leave yourself a voicemail and collect it, or try going into Settings > Telephony > Call Forwarding. That's sometimes enough to kick the network to send the message again.
Guest modfather Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Glad you even get a voicemail icon... dialed 123 to find 5 messages yet no icon on my phone... GRRRRRR out, ModFather

Guest spacemonkey Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 The problem is (I think, from my limited understanding of these things), that voice mail notification is basically a SMS message that goes to the phone, but that this type of SMS message has much less of a confirmation procedure with the network, it's low priority and the cell network just doesn't care about it. So basically, the network detects that your phone is on and in a cell, then the cell broadcasts the appropriate message, but the cell doesn't ask for or receive any sort of confirmation that the message was received. This means if you are moving about (especially on trains/underground) there is a good chance that you will miss the message and the network just won't care. Compare this to a normal SMS, where I believe, the network gets a confirmation of receipt back from the phone, if the network doesn't get this it will try to send the message again.
