WE MISSED THIS one one back in February at 3GSM Cannes, but it showed up again at the recent Symbian Exposium in London, England.

Canesta has found a way around the fact that smartphones can't support proper keyboards as they're too small.

The company has therefore created the world's first projection keyboard. Basically this is a suite of chips which project the image of a full-sized keyboard onto any convenient flat surface using a tiny, infra-red laser projector.

All the user has to do is type as if the projection were real and Canesta's technology resolve the user's finger movements into ordinary serial keystrokes which the smartphone can understand.

Canesta is working closely with ARM to ensure that the necessary chips are available to Smartphone manufacturers. Canesta has no intention of selling the keyboard itself but hopefully we'll soon see a Symbian device with the technology built in. µ

I saw one of these puppys a while back....

To say it looks usefull is an understatment!!! ;)

PS ignore the quotes about "Symbian devices", there MS bashers....

Sounds very nice, the only problem I forsee is if a fabric keyboard is £50, a rather swish projection keyboard will be...
