im just about to take my first big steps into the spv world and would like to now what you all think of the phone, ok a lot would say "phone"!!! but i cant call it anything else right now as i havent picked it up yet. what would you say are the good points and the bad points

As a start:

Good Points:

Plays video - now fullscreen

Plays MP3's

Plays lot's of games - including Doom

Quite good Outlook version

Small and looks like a phone (unlike PDA hybrids)

Massively customisable

Good development scene - so many useful applications

Full Internet (ok.. reasonably full internet)

Bad Points:

Poor ergonomics - you really have to get used to the keypad

Build quality - not great - a number of faults - headphone problem, paint scratch, screen scratch, dust behind screen

Not the easiest thing to use for Newbies.

A few annoying software bugs

Agree with the good points ;)

Bad Points :? not related to every SPV

There have been reported faults with the phone as listed above but that is not on every phone,

I've never had dust under the screen, my paint's not scratched and never had a headphone problem.

Ease of use? found it very easy to use, it's only when you start to do more indepth tweaking that it

can get complicated it's only the poor manual that lets people down, but then again we have

modaco to sort our problems out :).

Software bugs? on older os there were some but now there's nothing really to write home about.

Keypad, takes a while to get used to the fiveway controller but that's it.

This is just my opinion of 5+ months of use

The only problem I've had was that the fiveway contoller played up so I needed a new phone

last month, but with orange cutomer care it was replaced the same day delivered to my door :D

NOT PERFECT, BUT NOT FAR OFF!

The new software (downloaded from Orange) has fixed all my bugs, and I have only one complaint about the phone: short battery life. This is hardly surprising, considering the screen size and the processing power of the phone, and the battery lasts a lot longer than the one on my laptop!

Build quality doesn't seem as good as my Nokia 6210, but I don't use my phone as a football, so I doubt if there will ever be a problem.

A car charger is a must (about £8 from eBay UK - far cheaper than a laptop car charger), and a USB charger is very useful if you don't want to carry your mains charger around with you.

Also available (eBay UK) is a battery extender - a thingy that plugs into the phone that contains AA batteries.

The keys are rather small, but buy a Flexi Keyboard and you can do all your email on the move, and at great speed!

There is no voice dialling.

The GPRS signal is sometimes weak, but I live in the middle of nowhere, so this is not surprising either.

CONCLUSION

All in all, this is an excellent bit of kit, and I highly recommend it to anyone who can't be bothered to lug a laptop around, but still needs Internet access on the move, and also needs a mobile phone.

well it all sounds realy good, im picking mine up on friday, its second hand, so i hope that im not buying someones rubbish, if you see what i mean. On a more serious note , can the spv be unlocked and still work well, and can you use any sim card when it has been unlocked

No probs at all with unlocking here. All the sims I've tried worked fine too (voda,o2,T-mobile)

Good luck, your gonna love your SPV, oh and prepare to surrender your spare time as you'll be living here from now on ;) :)

Peace
