Hi Guys,

I have had my SPV since February and quite simply have had enough of it. Even after updating with the new software the phone is still not working as well as I believe it should be.

It is a typical Microsoft product. Computer Weekly magazine quoted Jessica Figueras of analyst firm Ovum - "typical Microsoft product" - complete with bugs and system crashes.

Of course, I expect many of you here to disagree and am not looking for a war of words regarding the SPV.

I am just wondering if anyone has managed to return their phone to either Orange or the shop they purchased it off? Could anyone advise me on an e-mail contact at Orange who I could discuss the issue with?

Many thanks

You will be wanting your SPV back after a few days without it, i can assure you, it was always going to be buggy in my opinion, it was the first Smartphone on the market after all, and it's the best phone your going to get for that price , what phone are you going to get when you get rid of THE ALMIGHTY ONE ;)

PS:You really should work in Pontarddulais Comprehensive

Hi David,

Yeah you are probably correct when you say that. I guess I should have know better. Still Microsoft/Orange should have released a better product. Or failing that they should be quicker with service packs and hotfixes.

Pontarddulais Comp? Are you a teacher or a pupil?

Best wishes,

Gareth.

Please do get rid of it now and don't make idle threats to do so on forums.

It's nothing like marmite, but it just isn't for some people.

Cheers.

After the updates, a hard reset, a big SD card and having installed all extra programs on the card, I HARDLY have crashes (we are talking less than 1 every week - and those are minor crashes!!!). My guess is it crashes due to all the beta proggys I install/uninstall and fiddle around with... without all that, I doubt it would crash very often.

That being said, it isn't a phone for everybody, but if you have just a lil comp knowledge, and like fiddling around with programs and registry keys etc etc - it truely is a GREAT phone (and so much more...).

If I were you, I'd try a hard reset and start all over *wink*! Only install the few things you really need, and give it a test run over a few weeks. Who knows, your experience with the phone might be totally different. And in a few months, you can upgrade to a better smartphone (hopefully with fewer bugs!)

Unbiased opinion from the worlds biggest SPV luffer *rofl*

I could get myself the latest nokia phone which would have all the stability and reliablity that I crave but I also know that I would be bored with it after the first couple of days. I want to tamper with the operating system and try new utilities and applications and find solutions to problems which can then be discussed on MoDaCo. I also know that as much as I want to to hate the Microsoft operating system, its ideal for doing exactly this.

We seem to forget that we have the first smartphone released and there is still a long way to go. I personally have enjoyed the journey so far and I am now looking forward to SPV2.

The SPV is a bit like SKY TV where you take it for granted and constantly complain how crap it is until it goes down and you're left with the alternatives

I don't think theres any going back down the un-smartphone route, what would you call it - a stupidphone? hardware and software challenged phone? Either way it would just be a 'phone', it would do everything that it was designed to do adequately, and nothing else. There'd be no times when you looked on the software section of moadco and found something interesting.

Having a phone you can crash is an achievement, it just shows how near to a pc it is - all we need now is a blue screen!!

My first SPV after hard re-setting was always locking up and crashing. I have had my second SPV for a few months now. I have not unlocked it. I have not hard re-set it. I only run signed software from Handango.

It has never had a fault!!! I have not had any GPRS problems like the first one that was very erratic.

Dose this tell you something!!

I may be a boring old fart? But I have a faultless SPV. Anyone else that can say this?

Hi People,

Many thanks for the replies. I will deal with some of them...

Ed - Okay, now put your toys back in the pram. ;-) It wasn't an idle threat it was a search for opinions and an e-mail address. I just expect things to work when I buy them. If a new toaster doesn't work I can take it back to Argos.

MoRFLez - Funny you mention the registry. After posting my message I found another site with registry tweaks etc. Will play with them later today. The phone is a lot better after the update - battery life is a great improvement. I do believe however that updates and support should come a lot quicker.

Thank you for all your opinions, they have been taken on board.

Best wishes to you all and your SPV phones.

Gareth

In answer to the original question, you'll probably have difficulty returning the phone outside of the initial 14 day trial period....

He did actually have a couple of relevant questions too ;)

But I think that some (not necessarily AcornWEZ here, though) make this kind of post because they almost want to be talked into keeping their [whatever piece of hardware it is]. There's no reason users shouldn't make this type of post here, MoDaCo's not only for positive opinions. There *are* people who matter that read here and an objective complaint-post might just make a difference one day....

My 2 pence :)

EDIT: my hopeless grammar

Hi,

Monolithix - Yeah that is what I thought. I am not really that bothered. I have to admit that I am impressed with the phone - although I do see that I didn't give that impression. The problem is that I believe products that are released to the public should be of a reasonable standard, and if not every effort should be made to a) recall the product or ;) in the case of software - release a service pack/rom update a.s.a.p.

I have read the rants here regarding Orange, and I believe there are many people who may want to send their SPV's back to Orange.

Chris b.a.r.f - Thanks for the support. As I said above, I am impressed with the phone - with what it does and so on so keeping it is not a problem. I also thought this was an open forum with people able to express their opinions and post questions without fear of being attacked :-)

Cheers again guys,

Gareth

Well this weekend I finally gave up with my SPV :) I sold it to a second hand shop for £165, then went and bought the Nokia 7250. Granted it's an ugly phone (hopefully something a new case will fix!) but it's got enough to keep me going for 6 to 12 months - radio, integrated camera, great battery life, and small form factor.

I'll be the first to admit that there are features I will miss, such as MSN Messenger and media player. I think the SmartPhone will be great in a couple of years, at the moment I'd compare it to early versions of Windows CE, has potential but not quite good enough...

All the best everyone, this is a great site where I've spent many an hour on. ;)

AcronWez: Whilst I agree with you that software updates and support *should* be as fluent as possible, sometimes this is not possible due to the extensive amount of testing required to ensure that other software bugs have not been introduced. In addition to this, there comes a point where too many updates cause more confusion amongst users and increase the amount of support needed.

ok i have only had my spv a few days, but i have never had a phone that makes me smile so much ;) was in a club the other night and someone asked about it just as a song came on which i happened to have the video for... boy did some jaws drop. people thought i was getting some sort of live feed from the stereo system in the club!!! everyone swiftly hid their phones, kinda like that advert on tv :)

and it has worms, sorry snails, which i used to love on m pc. :D

what more could anyone want!

Smartphone 2002 and SPV have been a bit of a trial at times, and the lack of software has been dissappointing, but these factors were always going to dissappear. Look at recent releases such as the various caller to picture applications, movie players and games. It's finally getting there on support...

And the good thing is, all future Microsoft Smartphone OS devices should run the existing software with no modification, this means, when THEY come out, you won't be waiting 6-12 months for software support.

Although it's always nice to kick microsoft in these situations, it reminds me of my previous phone, the Sony J70, I got it when it came out and it was really nice (even if a little light on features), it took over six months to get the background and ringtone editors that had been talked about since phone release. I think we really aren't that bad off with the SPV.

Once you've had a smartphone theres no going back.

I remember getting amazed u could play snake on a Nokia 3210, now when people say "I got the latest Sony-Ericson" my first question is "what does it do..?" the best u get is "its got a camera, it plays mp3's" and I just say "does it do anything worth mentioning" :o

They soon get open mouthed  when i slap em with a dvd rip and come out with "can u put that on my phone?", after which my fit of histerical laughter gives them the clear message "your phone sux too much ass to play this 300mb divx file"

SPV's r00l and are just gonna keep getting better and better, my c500 is almost 1yr old now and is been given away to impress someone else when my c550 arrives :(

PS. Nokia suck

I love it when old threads bob up to the surface. Like a snapshot of the past. :o

I would say that the Smartphone/Pocket PC Phone devices today bear next to NO resemblance whatsoever to the slow, buggy and underpowered Smartphones/Pocket PC Phones of two years ago. 8)

Those 'drop-kick into touch' moments are few and far between nowadays and I couldn't see myself ever leaving the Windows Mobile platform now, either in Smartphone, Pocket PC or a merger of the two.

Now I'm known as a bit of a phone-nerd I get shown new phones in the pub all the time but I never see anything that I'd consider switching to.

I've had a smartphone now since the first "chunky" SPV's came out. I then upgraded to the E200, then the C500 and now the C550.

The first SPV used to annoy the hell out of me when it froze (which was every 5 minutes) I can't remember how many times I had to take the battery out to reset it which incidentally only lasted about an hour.

I think the biggest jump was from the E200 to the C500 when the phone went from the size of a house to a reasonable up-to-date size and only crashed occasionally.

I was so impressed with the customisability of the smartphone that I couldn't resist upgrading to the newer models.

Now I have sat nav installed on my C550 which functions in perfect harmony with my BT headset.

I couldn't possibly go back to anything other than a smartphone. EVER!
