Guest Chief Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 (I mentioned this in another thread, apologies if you are rereading this) I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to the SPV a few days ago - I am entirely happy with the phone save for one thing - the screen. Now, I don't know if what I'm observing is normal or not, and I would appreciate if anyone could share their own experiences here. The problem is not with the TFT matrix itself (which is perfect) but the external clear plastic bit that forms the outer case. Aside from it not being the best quality plastic in the world, it is ever so slightly curved, and as a side effect is reflecting/refracting the backlight from underneath. The result is an optical washout of the display, with varying annoying patterns, and two pronounced reflections of the extreme edges of the backlight "going in" at an angle. The backlight itself may be equally to blame - it is very visible at the bottom of the screen and it is this "leaking" light causing the problems. It's worst/most noticeable on dark backgrounds (such as in the first menu in Orange Backup). Unfortunately all this appears most when viewed straight on, as it would normally be used. When viewed from 45 degrees above or below the interference is mostly gone, and the screen can be seen in all its unspoiled glory, but it is not at all natural or intuitive to hold the phone like this all the time. It is very distracting, and now I've noticed it I see it all the time! I returned it to the store and compared it with the demo one they had - theirs was noticeably better (and it actually had better contrast on the TFT matrix itself). The woman who spoke to me didn't really get what I was meaning though, and didn't care to look properly and see what I was seeing. As it wasn't a "bits falling off" or something similarly obvious fault she said she couldn't replace it, so my only option now is to chase up 150 it seems. Before I do that though, I need to know if this IS abnormal or I am just being a bit too critical. It seems ridiculous that the TFT screen would be ruined by design because of a bit of cheap plastic. Can anyone report any similar observations? If anyone could post a close up high quality pic of their own screen I would be very grateful - preferably in low light/darkness and with a dark coloured background. Am I asking too much? ;) Many thanks!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 Asking too much after a cross post ;) Here's wht I posted in the last thread.. Bevelled screen is normal it's part of the design, also the phone is only designed to be viewed straight on , some members have guessed at it being designed for privacy so only you can see the screen. I'm just curious if the plastic cover has been put in upside down? As you look at it, is it concave or convex? it should be very slightly convex.
Guest Lojt Posted May 5, 2003 Report Posted May 5, 2003 I dont get it... my screen is perfect (aside from the dust and that one scratch :|)
Guest zainkhan2050 Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 I know exactly what you are on about .
Guest Chief Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 I never thought this thread would resurface. You had the same with your original SPV, zainkhan? Orange wouldn't replace mine in the end, it sat in the box in a cupboard for a year, and I gave up on the SPV... Until the C500 that is :) - absolutely gorgeous screen.
Guest zainkhan2050 Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Yes indeed i've still got an orange spv cant afford c500 . And yes i do know what your talking about because the colour on my spv is really crap and i think this is due to the problem you discribed. I tryed to sort it out myself but now its worse than ever plus i've managed to aquire these anoying black marks on the plastic light  thinggy. PS. The names Zain my surname is Khan cheerz.
