Guest ChrisL Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Shame that Samsung dumped MS...those b*stards at symbian must be really pleased with themselves.. ..I was really looking forward to a piece of hardware that could pull off the MS Smartphone OS without all of the crappy quality issues that we've had to suffer due to the hyper-low manufacturing costs of the SPV. Full(ish) story here
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Oh, come now. Crappy quality issues? Surely you exagerate? Just a tad? So Samsung suddenly realise that MS Smartphone is a threat to the big phone companies... and bolt. Who won the PDA wars, and who *really* manufactures those PDAs, and most of the phones, these days? HTC and their sister companies in Asia. The biggies are going "fab-less", which, puns aside, means they don't manufacture anymore. They don't design the GSM/GPRS cores of their ohones, in some cases, and their jobs now, is to design sexy plastic to put around it. You think Quality is under *their* control? Mwahahahaha. Says MS
Guest ChrisL Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Hmmm, I sort of see your point Syvwlch...BUT it just seems that the SPV hardware had too many teething problems...front cover in which cracks appeared between buttons and loads of dust behind the screens (I am now on my 3rd SPV and just waiting for the next thing to go wrong. But although I'm boo-hooing about samsung dropping MS Smartphone, check out the variety of non-smartphone units they seem to at least be toying with.... ....click right here ...and to be honest, unless someone brings out a decent MS Smartphone handset before I'm due to upgrade...I willl probably end up defecting to some Symban-based brand (That is assuming that G. W. Bush's ranting and raving won't lead to the annihilation of the UK and the US before then!)
Guest Vector Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 What's wrong with the Tanager (SPVX)
Guest wideawake Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 With all due respect, are you reading a different article. Or adding a pinch of fiction between the lines. That article tells you nothing in my opinion. I would prefer to wait for some facts. Regarding the manufacturing spec of SPV by HTC, I have had quality problems regarding screen granted, but I have heard of only two instances posted on this site regarding inferior plastics. (Initial launch bugs I will agree with anyone about!)
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 My point was that hardware quality issues are quite separate from the OS issues, as these devices all end up being produced in Asia by the same companies for cost reasons... As for a decent MS Smartphone handset coming out, despite my previous jibe about sour grapes or blind dates (about P800 and Mio, resp.), I'm quite serious when I say that I'm currently quite happy with the SPV. It could stand improvements, certainly, like the brighter screen on the Tanager, but for a first shot, I'd say it's rather impressive. Judging from the Palm/iPaq wars, I'm confident we'll see many MS Smartphones coming now. For a simple reason : despite many opinions to the contrary, it's easier to go *down* the device chain as CPU power increases than *up*. Apps are easy to port, developpers communities are happy to expand their expertise and competence, and the paradigms are already there. In short, I have more confidence in the MS PocketPC/Smartphone community/industry's ability to profit from the revolution in the way we use and relate to phones and the net, than in the Symbian consortium's capacity to build upon their past as phone manufacturers locked in an incestious relationship with the telco operators that are now trying hard to dump them. Witness the WAP over GSM CSD fiasco, driven in large part by Nokia's games with standards and proprietary implementations, in the best M$ tradition!
Guest Emad Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 I think the SPV is a pretty sturdy little phone - certainly considering its the first of its type - better than the first pocket pcs by a mile certainly. Consider all thats packed in there compared to a standard phone and by a company which doesn't work on that form factor and you can see how the manufacturing process may need a lil tweaking. The first batches of T68s were crap because the middle plastic were too weak and sony ericsson had a good history of producing phones before that, give HTC a break..
Guest Nicolepa (MSFT) Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Don't believe everything that you read....... I asked around and that certainly isn't the case that I heard back from my collegues. :)
