Guest James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 i was quite surprised to see how much data I was actually downloading using GPRS and it has started to get me worried because I don’t think I am over using or abusing GPRS. I use it most days to retrieve E-mail, MMS messages I also send pics via e-mail and use the Internet. My bills range between 40 and 50 Meg a month which seems an awful lot!? Lucky its free... but this is about £70-80 if i was paying for it!! How many are you guys using?
Guest superkingdave Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 i have had a bit of a heavy month this month... i reckon about 70meg!
Guest Chic0 Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I seem to have been using more and more every month. Started off at 7mb, then 27mb and now I can use SPV as modem for PC it has risen to 55mb! There's no way I'll keep subscribing to GPRS when offer expires. Would be far too expensive.
Guest James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 why is it soooo expensive? it is obviously aimed at the business user dowloading there e-mails on the road etc..... the price is going to stop people using the SPV for what its good for!
Guest simonastro Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 sorry spell it out to me u are using bought gprs tracker on decert fones ?
Guest Bazz Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I've actually been using less and less. 30Mb for the 1st couple of months and ~5Mb for the last couple. Don't really use it for e-mail (check Hotmail occasionally), but then I work at a computer all day. Glad it was "unlimited" while I was messing with the novelty factor. Also have you set the pass-through option on your PC? Saves a lot of data!
Guest James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 i dont use it during work as i can freely use the internet here... thats why i was surprise to find out how much i was using it. i am looking for a free GPRS counter so i can find out why i use so much data.. http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=6114
Guest kevlar Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 beware, offer ends 31st March. Kevlar
Guest Bazz Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 That's the last time you can sign up for it, but it runs until April 30th: The pack can be purchased until 31st March 2003 and runs until 30th April 2003. They just don't wanna chanrge half months.
Guest kevlar Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 That's not what they told me a few days ago. Kevlar
Guest Bazz Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Wouldn't surprise me, as they seem to change the conditions for this promo as and when they feel like it, but that's what it says on their http://www.orange.co.uk (click on phones select the SPV and then see the link at the bottom).
Guest Chic0 Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Checked out orange site and it says it will be end of April 2003 http://www.orange-today.co.uk/spv/?content=10
Guest kevlar Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Thats great :) , another month of gprs!. Kevlar
Guest James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 well dont slow it down for everyone else!
Guest kevlar Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 The most I've used in one month is 15MB. I intend to keep the lowest priced package just for checking emails , and use my free minutes on ED50 to surf in the evening ( when I get some free time in work, I work shifts ). Does anyone with GPRS monitor know how much is used when checking email every 15 minutes? ( assuming no emails to collect ). I'm hoping the inclusive 0.5MB on the lowest package will be enough to check email all month. Kevlar
Guest Carnivor Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 My bill arrived yesterday and I used 0.14mb, a light user you may sayMy bill arrived yesterday and I used 0.14mb, a light user you may say

I thought that only wap browsing comes off ED50 mintues not GPRS.
Guest kevlar Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 no, I can log onto an ordinary isp with ED50, one of the few ( only? ) tariffs where data calls come out of your inclusive minutes. This doesn't use gprs, and will be slower, but at least I will be getting use out of my free minutes. This tariff is no longer available incase you were wondering. I've been on it for about 4 years, started as ED20 but then they made it ED50, that's 50 off peak minutes everyday, upto 1550 minutes a month for £15.50. No wonder they stopped it!. Kevlar
Guest James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 is there a quicker connection avalibe for the SPV apart from plugging it into the cradle and using another connection, High Speed Data Service?
Guest Bazz Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Nope the HSCD (or whatever it's called) gives you 14400 but is the same as dial up so requires you to connect it to a laptop. GPRS is the fastest.
Guest James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 What speed is 3G supposed to be? when it is working....
Guest fraser Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 3G? And you're worried about GPRS costs? You're in for a shock mately, consumer-priced 3G is quite a while away! :)
Guest vampyre69 Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 GPRS is kinda like ISDN/ADSL in the way of cost - - expensive at first - slightly cheaper later on when more people use it but still expensive for home users to warrant its everyday use. - eventually it will either be as cheap as chips or 3G will be so widespread everyone will have deffected to it and GPRS will be like ISDN - no-one wants it, no-one can still afford it for everyday use, but its still more reliable than 3G (ADSL). Hope that makes sense.
