Guest finisterre Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 Everybody's talking like they'll wait for the P800 so they can develop their own apps, but surely if Orange have gone with certification on the SPV then maybe they could do the same with the P800 (or is it just not technically possible?). What's the point of having certification on the SPV if people will be able to destroy the network using malicious code on a P800? It's like me having half a roof on my house to stop my stuff getting wet! Cheers, Fred. (anti-certification)
Guest Bazz Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 Yup, that's a major point - otherwise they are just penalising Smartphone users :-( However is the P800 going to be launched on Orange? Is the SPV going to be launched on another network which won't have certification? In which case everyone'll leave Orange... Barry
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 'Is the P800 going to be locked down?' What do YOU think! The question really is, 'Is the P800 going to be locked down on networks other than Orange?' P
Guest shaun stuart Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 I am not so sure that it will (on other networks at least) the Nokias 7650 and 9210 arent both run on the symbian OS. Does anyone have one of these with Orange currently, are they locked down ?

Barry The SPV is made by a Taiwanese company; I'm not privvy to what they have done with Orange, but I'd expect them to have signed a exclusive deal for a period and then they can sell it to anyone. Interestingly the early shots of one made by Compal had an Orange Logo on them, but not any more - there's a picture of it here http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone...es.asp?style=99
Guest j_sincla Posted December 8, 2002 Report Posted December 8, 2002 I saw the management of HTC which makes the SPV for Orange last week - It's a one year exclusivity with a 200,000 unit minimum order but Orange can waive this exclusivity at their option - The next version is in pre-production. It does have Bluetooth but is not due out for a year.

I have just upgraded from an Orange 9210 to the SPV and no it wasnt locked down..hence loads of shareware and freeware apps.
