Guest vijay555 Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Children: just went around looking for PDA screen protectors to protect my beloved SPV. PCWorld had none, likewise dixons or "The City Organiser". Popped into Rymans the Stationers and they had Palm m100 screen protectors at £14 (surely it's cheaper to buy a new m100!?) Was about to give up (got them on order at Maplins for £6), when i thought i'd try paul's suggestion of Cellotape... And, to my joy, i discovered Scotch Packing Tape, Extra Quality. This stuff is crystal clear, much clearer than any Cellotape, costs £2.49, attaches cleanly and is 20m long. That means that i've still got tape for 199 more SPV's [ i'm happy to tape yours up, especially if you've got a Tanager - post to me, preferably uninsured post :) ] I'd recommend it, should keep all your future phones for the next decade or so nice and scratch free. Lv, ;) V EDIT: Step by step: right-e-oh, i've just done the screen, and here are my thoughts. The finish itself is immaculate, almost unnoticable, and better than almost any other screen protector i've used. It takes some trial and error because the tape has the occassional blemish, but still, you've got 50 meters of the stuff and only need about 5cm, so more than enough to try again. Additionally, unlike most protectors, this stuff can be re-seated many times without causing blemishes in the surface (ie if you need to re-align, or to pull back to remove air bubbles, no problem.) 0. Wipe screen gently, use pledge/generic polish to remove gunk/static, and polish off gently with towel or similar. 1. We will be applying tape horizontally, right to left. Align the tape with the TOP edge of the screen perhaps even about 1mm below to allow air bubble escape. 2.Anchor the tape to the right hand edge (right on the side of the phone, about 5 mm), then holding the dispenser, pull it taught right across the screen to the other side, overlapping on the volume control side again by about 5mm. Cut off from dispenser. 3. Gently use your _fingers_ to push airbubbles to nearest edge. Pull back the tap from each anchored side, and gently tease bubbles out towards the edge, then reseat the tape with your fingers, and finally when you get to the screen edge, use your nail to ensure a nice tight fit with no shadows. Again, overlap the excess tape on the edge of the phone. Repeat for both left and right edge. 3. The tape should now be overlapping a fair bit on the bottom, just above the "SPV" logo. Pull back tape, use fingers, push bubbles, use nail to make tight edge. Press down excess. 4. Using a fine craft knife, rest it in the little recess 2mm from the screen and slide the knife around, neatly cutting off the excess tape. The recess makes a very neat guide, very easy to do. Only do this on left and right (top doesn't need doing, we aligned to the top, remember!) 5. The bottom edge is harder. No guide, so just manually trim as much as possible. I just let it overlap by about 1.5mm. 6. In the process, the tape will probably become opaque and shed some "crap". No problem. Use some pledge again, spray it onto a tissue, and polish the tape. Unusually, this stuff becomes clearer the more you polish it. Mine is now crystal clear and bubble free. The 2mm overlap around the screen might help with dust. 7. Send VJ a tanager in appreciation. Hope it helps someone. As i said, i've been screen protecting since early IPAQ days, and this is the best stuff i've found for this purpose. Easy to work with, and nice results. Cheap too!
Guest Gorskar Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Nice one. I'd imagine it would be easier to post the roll of tape though ;)
Guest vijay555 Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 as as may be, but how else would i "accidently" acquire a tanager?! BTW, was thinking. It might be possible to neatly wrap the whole SPV in this stuff. It's clear and quite wide (5cm) so not too many overlaps. Will try to give it a go. However, to use a pun, it might look tacky... V
Guest drblow Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Does it not look like one of those kids with cellotape holding their specs together?!?! :)
Guest adam Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 You could try and affect the outcome of this weeks draw to obtain a tanager!!
Guest vijay555 Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Adam: tried, but no cigar yet... drblow: Oculus Reparo! Haven't tried it yet. will do ASAP. But one way or the other, i recommend the tape. I reckon it should help a bit with dust. V
