Guest anshuljain Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 I'm almost on the verge of buying a SPVx/Tanager, but before buying i'd appreciate if someone could give me some feedback on the device, and how it measures up to the Orange SPV. The features look exactly the same, but i've read some differences in the screen and keypad layout. Is it very different from the SPV, aesthically? Thanks, -Anshul
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Flatter keys and a brighter display. That's pretty much you lot...
Guest vijay555 Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 And a phallic joystick.. Better than the "nipple" tho! V
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 The screen is FANTASTIC, if you're into looking at photos and watching videos then it rocks! The phone is a fraction longer than the SPV, but it's only noticeable when put side by side. I have to admit, the Tanager feels a bit more "plasticky" than the SPV, but certainly no worse than most other phones on the market, and it's certainly a bit lighter in weight. The external speaker has quite a nice tone to it when playing music, (more "trebley" than the SPV) but not a major issue. The main difference is the joystick, which can take a bit of getting used to, but I think it's a definite improvement. General navigation with the joystick is quicker, and if you play games like Pacman, and Motocross then it really makes a big difference. The buttons are much better, bigger and flatter, making texting etc. easier, and they are spread out over a larger area of the phone, making one handed use much easier. My Dad fancied an SPV (after seeing mine) but was put off by the fiddly buttons/action pad, and his eyesight's not great, after seeing my Tanager he wants one!!! He found the buttons miles better, and the screen easier to read (I never had a problem with the SPV screen).
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Oops, sorry forgot about the joystick! hehe. Where did you get your Tanager Simon? How much was it? ;)
Guest anshuljain Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Great, thanks a lot guys for the replies. I've been lusting after the SPV for a long time. But the keypad is too small and put me off. The Tanager looks promising. Is 625$ (USD) a good price for the Tanager?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 You can get it from Alien Wireless from $650, with a 10% discount for MoDaCo Plus subscribers. So, MoDaCo Plus = $36, Tanager = $585 Total = $621, and you get a Plus Subscription included :) P
Guest anshuljain Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 I won't be using it for gaming and stuff. Mostly to manage my contacts, calender, SMS(a lot) and the occaional MP3 playback. Another question, since SMS comes to my mind...the T9, is it the "Nokia-style" or the "SonyEricsson-T68i-style". In the Nokia-style, the spaces are entered by pressing "0" and in Ericsson its by pressing "1". What is the T9 implementation on the Tanager? Would it be recommended for a heavy SMS user?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Unfortunately the T9 is a little unreliable for some at times, "forgetting" custom words. On the SPV space is "#", "0" changes through the matching words. One other fallback is that you can not edit words once you press space.
Guest nobznss Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Sorry to ask, and this may be a dumb question, but is the Tanager supposed to come to the US? I've read some information that it may be here in the next 6 or so months? Anybody hear the same or am I just making up stuff? Thanks!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Available from www.alienwireless.net for $650, if you sign up to MoDaCo+ you get a 10% discount.
Guest modfather Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 well if the sms is the same on spvx as spv id say i is good for a heavy SMS user i sent 693 text last month and i ddnt have a hard time doing it on my SPV either. i tried txting froma nokia 3310 yesterday and i cannot text so quick, by the way T9 stays disabled on my phone. out, modfather
Guest jacoch Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Well, I would like to add my comments. I have received my tanager three days ago. The screen is incredible. If you put a SPV and a Tanager side by side, you'll think that the SPV has backlight off. The contrast is also much better. For the keys, it's much easier to type as they are larger. Side keys are also bigger (record, volume and power). And it always turn on at first try. So the power key seems to have been improved. But I don't like the joystick for playing games. I often press up or down instead of action. But it's better for general use. The cover is also less cheaper and well assembled. No noise when pressing on the side of the phone. I have also made some benchs with SmartTV, just to be sure the proc is the same. And as expected, fps is the same.
