Guest ClintEastman Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect at Microsoft Corp., today unveiled a new PC prototype designed to enhance today's computing experience and usher in the next wave of innovation for the PC industry during his opening keynote at the 12th annual Windows® Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC). Gates showed the new PC prototype as just one example of the type of innovation required to address the needs of users -- innovation that is only possible when hardware and software are developed together. Co-developed with HP and code-named "Athens," the advanced PC prototype represents an evolution of the PC as a center for communication and collaboration, one that simultaneously simplifies PC operations while merging all forms of communication -- including next-generation voice, video and text messaging -- into a consistent, streamlined design. "The hardware industry and Microsoft are leading the next wave of PC development by creating unprecedented levels of synergy between hardware and software," Gates said. "The result will be innovative products that improve the way our customers work, communicate, learn and are entertained. The 'Athens' PC prototype is just one example of the amazing things that are possible when hardware and software companies collaborate deeply on new designs." Photos Press Pack Nice :)

Guest adam Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 My desk would look vacant if I got one. Ah, sod the desk!
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Nice screen, foolish box. Am I the only person on the planet who wants a proper ATX case nowerdays?! I need space for upgrades, I don't want to be stuck with a base spec PC! One thing I hate doing is having to pull out a PSU just to put in a new PCI card! Just try to upgrade a HP Pavillion PC!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 I completely agree Protoza. I was going to build either a mini-itx box or get a shuttle PC for uni in Sept, changed my mind though when i realised i'm using all 5 PCI slots on my current board, i'd have to get shot of my DVD drive and i'd only have space for one hdd!
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 If you're after a good case check you the Chieftec range. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ I got myself one and they're fantastic, however the steel models are quite weighty! If you want some space for upgrades you can't go far wrong with this one. Check out some of the online reviews, you'll be suprised how often the interal design has be used by other companies recently too!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Yep, almost bought one a few months back then relaised i needed the cash for the MoDaCo meet!
Guest ClintEastman Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 If you don't like that you could always go for this case! (yes she's a PC case!!) :) More Pics...

Guest ClintEastman Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 WinHEC 2003: Athens PC a Mac Clone? There were an awful lot of reports this week comparing Microsoft's and HP's Athens PC to the Mac, and at first glance, this comparison seems to make sense: Both machines feature a 23" widescreen display with rounded edges, and a small cube-like CPU box connected to the screen with a single wire. But the comparison falls apart when you actually know something about the Athens PCs, and don't just make your opinions based on a few photos Microsoft posted online. The Athens PC was designed to for functionality, not just to look pretty, which is the biggest differentiator between it and the Mac. Its keyboard, mouse, and integrated handset are all wireless, unlike the Mac, and all of these components feature notification lights tied to work functions such as email, voicemail and meetings. And the Athens PC screen is not only high quality, but features the super-high pixel density that Longhorn's advanced graphics features can take advantage of, a capability the Mac--and Mac OS X--lacks. So get beyond the superficial, one-glance comparison, and you'll see the Athens PC is a classic PC--functional, useful, and horsepower-packed--and not just a pretty Mac clone at all. I'll have a full writeup about the Athens PC--and what this means for future Windows versions--on the SuperSite for Windows next week. Stick that in ya iMac and smoke it!!! :)
