Im sure a lot of us will be out of contract or soon to be out of contract in 6 months and be looking for a new one, im sure I speak for the majority of people on this forum in saying my next phone is gonna be a smartphone, they are absolutely superb.

Just wondering what you guys think will be the major developments and new features on future phones that we are likely to see in say 6 months time?

200mhz XScale CPU handsets (hopefully) running SP2003, may have to wait a few months longer for that though...looking forward to the Xmas flood of new handsets :)

I suppose just better processors, more memory etc.

Before, you used to get a new handset to get new features, but with smartphone, you can add the new features as you go along, so there is less need for something new, until they get faster etc.

While all the advanced stuff is great, I would hope that the basics are right for the next one! I dare not say it on this forum, but howabout something as intuitive as Nokia :) Once all the small stuff is sorted then it would truly be a phone to die for. :(

I want internet on, always on, all the time, and I dont want to have to 'connect', basically I want cable modem - level - access (speed and utility) on the phone.

I want:-

Faster processor,

More memory,

The option to be able to upgrade to more memory,

Improved camera and frame rate(same as Davidrm),

Changable covers,

Keys a little bit more spaced apart as to avoid cramp in my thumb when trying to text(I have big thumbs  ),

No certification,

Polyphonic ring tones,

Fast forward in WMP

Would have to be a Smartphone for me now

and probably a few other things i can't think of right now.

Don't get me wrong, i love my SPV, i love technology for technologies sake, the SPV has taken Mobile Phones to a new level and i'm keeping it until an improvement is on the market but like Monolithix said this could be around Xmas............. 8)

OK, this seems to have become a bit of an I want... but I want the world, so instead what I envisige...

Is the Mitac Mio and similar handsets.

So basically they'll be quicker and more responsive (200Mhz).

They will have inbuilt cameras.

Memory will probably be exactly the same, but hang on, the more memory thing is covered by putting in a big SD Card anyway.

Handsets with Bluetooth may appear when Smartphone 2003 (ozone) appears.

They will still be 2.5g (ie you "dialup" to GPRS, same as now)

Hopefully the battery life will be improved.

If we are talking nearer the end of 2004, then I would expect that we'd at least be talking about 3g Microsoft Smartphone devices, which would all include bluetooth.

I'm interested in the comment about how intuitive the nokia's are... are you referring to phones like the 3650 that have a totally OUT THERE keypad? As to within the OS itself, I don't think the way this works is going to change dramatically, the homescreen and programs menu type approach seems pretty good to me and I would anticipate microsoft changing it at all.

I love my SPV, and take great delight in mocking my housemates with Nokias, but a few improvements could make it near perfection.

The ability make a phone call without the software fookin up

SMS counter

Lighter

Thinner

Built in Cam jpg/mpg - make the camera so it can be rotated to face the user.

Higher Build Quailty

Less dust under the screen!

Bluetooth - wireless headphone for mp3!

A decent version of WMP

Faster Processer

Always on GPRS without paying an arm and a leg

Better support from orange

Faster USB interface (thank the lord for a mmc reader!)

Presumably its too much to hope for that MS might incorparate WiFi over BT...

i dont think we are going to see any radical changes withing 6 months, 200mhz processors and thats about it i reckon, further down the line we'll see ozone released (which fixes several of the points that Mr_Protozoa

mentions... sms counter, bluetooth and wmp9) and going on current trends, in roughly 1 yr and 3 months 400mhz processors.

1] Voice activated dialling (for when you're in the car)

2] Longer battery life (for when you're not in the car)

3] Bluetooth (no need to install a specific in-car kit)

4] Faster processor (for when you're about to die of old age)

5] Docking station (for big screen and keyboard)

6] Payments by infrared (for when you're shopping - key in the amount and your PIN - the cost of the goods would appear on your phone bill. I guess we have to wait for a bank to buy Orange (or vice versa) before this happens)

7] That's all folks! © Bugs Bunny

Touch screen would be nice, make text entry much easier. Doubtful it may be, but we can dream.

I think the OS for the SPV is excellent and as had been said before can't see that it would change that much.

But I still use it the most for calls and texts, it is a phone after all :) So I would like an easier way to redial the last number you dialed, to be able to scroll through the contacts with the number displayed, an sms counter, permanent delivery reports, the ability to receive picture messages - especially animated ones - so that I can share the joke with all my nokia owning friends. Simple things really, things that would make a great phone even better.

Having said that, Bluetooth would be fantastic and howabout Microsoft producing an Office Suite compatible to go with Outlook.
