Guest fraser Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Hi Folks, Check out the following story detailing SD cards with integrated storage and Wi-Fi capabilities. 128 Meg available sometime this month, 256 Meg "middle of 2003". GPRS costs have possibly become irrelevant. Combined with a broadband connected Wi-Fi hotspot, we'll get better-than-3g speeds for free! Oh yeah, bring it on!! :) Only $130 bucks, not bad at all, the GPRS savings will make up for that in a couple of months if you are a heavy user. http://archive.infoworld.com/articles/hn/x...isk.xml?s=IDGNS This is what I've been waiting for. I've got Wi-Fi in the office and at home, so most of the time I'll have free internet!
Guest fraser Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Wi-Fi is wireless LAN, 801.1b. You get an access point and any Wi-Fi device within several hundred meters gets access. If the access point is connected to the internet, you get connected to the internet. You can get Wi-Fi "hotspots" in lot's of places. Many cafes and bars have it already, even McDonalds is getting in on the act. Also, many home owners leave their Wi-Fi kit "open" for public access, there is a massive community undertaking going on just now to database all of these and get them working together. People "wardrive" around cities with wireless kits hooked up to GPS positioning equiptment, which maps all of the access points that broadcast. There are even semi-secret "warchalking" markings that people can chalk on walls to indicate access is available. A google search for any of the quoted terms (above) will turn up lot's of information. If we pull it off, it means that the worlds "final mile" for telecommunications is no longer owned by large corporations. It's a massive boost for privacy and people-power.
Guest ClintEastman Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I thought the SPV wasn't fully SDIO compatible.
Guest fraser Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Hmm, that does not sound good at all! It must be a software issue, if that's the case. SDIO is a serial communications protocal, Wi-Fi (etc) won't be doing anything different in terms of hardware interaction. All you would need are the neccessary drivers for it...
Guest ClintEastman Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I hope so, but have a bad feeling about it!
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Well, Orange is looking very seriously at WiFi hotspots, and has made announcements about them. We may see some support from them on this. I'm curious to see what the business model is going to be for them, tho. Smartphony confirms that the SPV is not SDIO compatible, in software, and that HTC has no plans to add it anytime soon. We shall see...
Guest jtsaint Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 My only issue with this is that drivers will be needed to interface the phone and its software with the card. There is no way this will just "plug and play" unless they have specifically targeted the SPV / Smartphone environment. Would be very usefull and better than bluetooth (which has significantly less bandwidth). Tranfering files from my networks computers would be amazing ( a whole 128mb card full of data in just over a minute!!!!!) As far a wi-fi hotspots - a correct configuration of an 802.11b and g network can easily prevent badit users, but is amazing how money corporates dont bother :)
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 It's more than drivers for the WiFi card, there are missing bits in the way the OS supports the SD card slot...
Guest ivanmacx Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 ...and, without wanting to be a wet blanket, a decent Wi-Fi connection is going to cane the battery.
Guest ClintEastman Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 It would cane the battery, but not as much as making a call! Sometimes i forget i can call people on it! :) The previous statement is a lie.
Guest casper508 Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 Map of WiFi hot-spots in the UK http://www.kewney.com/articles/030228-maps.html Cas
Guest Maverick Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 Go to http://www.consume.net for Wi-Fi hotspots... And now some bad news... http://www.brighthand.com/article/Wi-Fi_SD..._Until_Mid-Year
Guest midnight Posted April 20, 2003 Report Posted April 20, 2003 sorry guys, but you'll have to wait even longer  the smartphone2002 os wont support it, but possibly supported in ozone (keep yer fingers crossed) ;)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 21, 2003 Report Posted April 21, 2003 I think it is, its just lacking drivers.... (which the manufacturer would ave to write presumably...)
