Guest viskas Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 ciao everybody! I am an italian user of the SPV. My phone is decertified and unlocked and I am using it with italian vodafone network. something strange happens when I connect to GPRS network: after the first connection, for example to check e-mail, the G remains over the signal sign, but it's impossible to surf over gprs again. if you start pocket eplorer, for example, you can't load any page, nor you can check e-mail again. you need to restart the phone to use gprs functions on the handset. Any suggestion?!? the gprs settings are correct, I have already checked.
Guest Bro Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I too have the same problem, Using Orange U.K....
Guest martin Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 My phone is decertified and unlocked and I am using it with italian vodafone network. something strange happens when I connect to GPRS network: after the first connection, for example to check e-mail, the G remains over the signal sign, but it's impossible to surf over gprs again. I've heard of other people having this problem but I'm not sure whether the problem is in the phone or not. I would try a few things When making an Internet connection through the GPRS network it should give the small G and say dialling, finding site and connecting. From then on it should just say finding site and connecting for all following pages. What does yourt phone do and say for the above test. Does the following pages fail 100% of the time ? What settings do you have in data connections-options for 'redial attempts' and 'idle disconnect after'. This won't be the problem but will tell us what requests the phone will make to the serving GPRS node. After you have connected to the first page, press the red 'call end' key. Does the G dissapear and can you setup another call with dialling, finding and connecting ? Again, after connecting to the first page, goto the quick list (access from power button) and turn radio off and on. When the big centre G re-appears, can you make a internet connection with dialling, finding and connecting.
Guest drblow Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I have this problem in UK aswell. My remedy is to ALWAYS hit the red 'end call' button (the small G will be replaced by the usual phone symbol)- then quit IE using task manager. I can the reconnect to GPRS. It is annoying, and this is the only thing that has worked for me. Orange haven't got a clue about the problem (and they really expect us to pay $3 per MB for this?????)
Guest martin Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I thought it might be the GPRS node and maybe the mobilty status was dropping to IDLE but it could just be a problem with the explorer application itself. Try this - should be interesting. Goto data connections-options and set 'idle disconnect after' to 5 mins. Access a page on the Internet (small G active). In Task manager view process list and kill explorer. (small G stays active as you should still have an active PDP context) Load internet explorer again and connect to a different site. This should only give you finding and connecting (no dialling) as theoretically you should still have an active Internet connection from the Gateway GPRS node. I should prove that its not the GPRS node thats restricting your access to consecutive pages.
Guest martin Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Another idea came to mind. There could be a problem writing page histories? What do you have in IE-options-memory.
Guest James Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 i can confirm the connection bug as mentioned above i get it all the time. all i do is turn the radio off them back on again to fix it. its the biggest pain the ass ever! i really dont see how they can charge for such a crap buggy service
Guest drblow Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Martin - My memory contains - Temporary files 0kb - cookies 5kb - History 183kb Any use??
Guest James Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 i have tested deleting stuff.. ending apps.. everything i can think of but nothing helps. only turning the radio off thee on again works
Guest Bro Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I have temp : 0kb - cookies 7kb- history 53kb When I get the bug, It's usually like this , 1st time fine, next time i want gprs the symbol goes to 'G' but it just sticks at 'Dialling...' Tried the taskmanager trick and seems to be ok so far... bit of an arse having to do it tho...
Guest viskas Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 martin: the task manager trick works perfectly, but it's really annoying... the idle time on my phone is 5 minute, redial attempts 3. and martin, it's not always the second page that fails. it's something different: if I download e-mail, I quit inbox, stat ie, I can't find any page. If I start IE, surf a few pages and then quit IE, the small G remains active and I can't download email. it sticks on connecting....
Guest James Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 well i have now managed to fix it on my phone. all i have to do is kill the ia caller app i have running.
Guest James Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 sorry. ignore the last post. after further testing its not the ia app
Guest drblow Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Jlo - When you say you have fixed it on your phone - whadda u mean?!?! Have you fixed the GPRS connection/reconnection problem alltogether?? If so - I WANNA KNOW HOW!!!!!! :x
Guest martin Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 What I find strange is that nobody mentions having connection faults on the first page. I take it you can connect first time OK. If so, set 'idle disconnect after' to none, this will attempt to release the existing internet connection after each page download and create a new one for the next page. It will obviously say dialling for each page but it will state whether the problems exists for PDP context activation.
Guest Bro Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Mmmmmm, I set to 'idle disconnect' , and only works fine, I.e. loads one page at a time and treats each page as a new request, WHEN i kill WhocallMgr... so mebbe I kill whocall from now on when i need to surf?
Guest martin Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 We had a lot of GPRS complaints after Whocall was first installed but I don't know what the final solution was. Does anybody remember ?
Guest James Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 Mmmmmm, I set to 'idle disconnect' , and only works fine, I.e. loads one page at a time and treats each page as a new request, WHEN i kill WhocallMgr... so mebbe I kill whocall from now on when i need to surf? early whocall apps caused this problem but was fixed in later releases, also whocall is now smartface.
Guest martin Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 jlowap, Do you still having the dialling problem today ?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 I have similar GPRS problems with IA Caller ID. Sometimes its fixed by a Radio off/on, i usually have ot kill the process though...
Guest NickB&SPV Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 When I am stuck on Dialing.... I have found that pressing the action button again gets it started fine. :)
Guest badboy4life Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 I never had this problem until i installed the IA Caller Beta, then i had to keep turning the radio on and off. I have now uninstlled it and have had no problems. Except now when i boot my phone it says can't load IA Caller, and there's nothing in the ipsmstartup
Guest ashley Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 After much testing, this works for me too. Annoying about the IA caller start up though
Guest James Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 the new beta versions of ia caller works fine. i am running with it now i get connection all day when i want.
