Guest Simon Desser Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Just stumbled across this on Microsoft Smartphone FAQ's, I thought it was funny :) What's there to consider :?: Oh, and don't forget to stay tuned :?SMS Counter.jpg
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 What date was that posted? It's nice that they are only considering it
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 March 10th 2003  He he, it's a bit like Ford saying we're considering putting a speedometer in a car :)
Guest madu Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 LOL! [and some brakes as well... but only considering] You'd think those guys are clever... :)
Guest midnight Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 they've got the sms char counter in ozone at least
Guest Star_Dudy Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Hey wake up everybody :( The last DK upsdate has already the SMS Character Count !!! :)
Guest midnight Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 yeh, DK update, not much use for anyone else, and even the DK update sms char counter doesnt work correctly oh, and ozone is the codename for smartphone2003 os also, you could use orneta notepad, that has a character count and allows you to send the text as sms
Guest Star_Dudy Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Yeahn I think Orneta Notepad is the best solution for SMS now. The counter works great and you can choose the recipient in a list...
Guest caio1 Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 But I don't like orneta way to select contact and everytime to quit it needs 3step. also sent messages aren't saved in sent items folder. Caio
Guest mantrac Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I would like to keep this strictly between us please... There's word on the street that the new SPV will feature this impressive new technology that allows you to speak out a name and it will dial it for you! People are secretly referring to it as "Voice Dial" (VD for short!). I also hear that for the first time ever, the phone will be able to write "NON-ENGLISH" characters, effectively putting on the mobile phone map all those uncivilised non-english speaking countries that are only just discovering the use of mobile phones as a communication medium... Perhaps one day, I will be able to exchange text messages in Swedish or Danish, with those scandinavian tribesmen who (as every american knows) still live in igloos and ride their mooses to work... Surely, one day mobile phones will reach that far away place.... and that will signal the dawn for non-english character sets!! Can't wait.... (On a serious note, this is the first time in technological history where a hardware upgrade (the SPV) is lacking the most basic features that made mobile phones so user friendly.... But then again, that phrase never existed within the borders of the Redmond empire...)
Guest ajb3000 Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Can't you see a pattern emerging? No Character counter, no GPRS counter, I'm surprised they included a call counter.
Guest yoos Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I'm lost... .I have a character counter in the UK Orange update I just applied... Do you not have it??
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 I'm lost... .I have a character counter in the UK Orange update I just applied... Do you not have it?? Really? sounds like there may be a newer update but O have kept quiet about it?
Guest jacoch Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 The ROM version that came with the Tanager has a char counter. But as it has not been written by MS, it is not really part of the inbox apps. It's a trick that wake up when a new message is in foreground. It then look into the receipient and if it's a number, the window title is changed to a char counter (replace the New message title). The problem : if you reply to a SMS from someone in your contact list or do a new message by selecting a contact in the list, the char counter doesn't appear. They forgot to search for the string '(SMS)' in the recipient name. Regarding the voice dial, it has always been supported by Smartphone 2002 OS. Unfortunately, to make it work, the operator has to licence a voice recognition engine and map it to the phone APIs. Orange has decided not to licence such an engine and that's why voice dial is not available. Smart did the same with their Tanager.
Guest madu Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 Jacoch, that 'trick' SMS app that acts as a char counter, is it possible to rip that off DK update and apply to UK?
Guest jacoch Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 I didn't try. This ROM version was included in my Tanager. But I have restored my Orange backup on this phone and don't have the char counter anymore. But I suppose it will be part of next update as users having danish update have exactly the same char counter. In my point of view, it is not interesting as long as it's not able to activate when the recipient is taken from the contact list. Hope they'll fix this before making the danish update available to everyone.
Guest yoos Posted May 12, 2003 Report Posted May 12, 2003 Strange... I just noticed something now... So far, the only time it appears that I have a character counter is when I have a speed dial/shortcut to someones SMS number. If I reply to a message or go in manually and select new -> message -> menu -> add to: it doesn't work?? So I guess mine works like jacoch explains...
Guest luigiperez Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Hi Mates! For all those people worried about the counter just tell you that when writing a sms in each line you can write up to 24 characters so dividing 160/24 you can write upto 6,66 lines in each sms if u want to spend only for one sms. Hope this helps! Iknow is not high technology but i find it useful.. Cheers Luis
Guest madu Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 That's all good lui, but each character differs in 'width', it is not ASCI or plain text font where each character takes up 1 'slot' so you can actually fit 42 dots in a line!! And I like using dots, as you probably noticed.... And other punctuation marks also take less space than a character. And if your character is a W that will take pretty much... There was a tip by someone that basically in normal txting (that is w/out rediculous amounts of punctuation and i, l) you should only write within 1 screen (untill scroll slider appears)
Guest mrjuglas Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Well, I have to say I find it easier and cheaper to use Planus SMS as it has a character counter and they've fixed all the server problems now - for anyone who's not up to speed on Planus see the Planus forum on this site... :)
