These are so annoying, and seem to be multiplying!! Has anyone got the names/addresses of whoever started these adverts so I can strangle them with an internet connection?!

have you tryed the link it keeps saying?

They just appear - it's not caused by opening a website or anything, and they come in bursts of about 5 at a time. Most just want to hold you to ransom by selling you the software you need to block the adverts that they're sending!

oh guys, firstly , run a firewall :)

if you have not got one, or need to do this manually.. goto command prompt, and type:

net stop msg

This will stop the messenger service, that sends these alerts

Nope, but that net stop msg worked. Can you recommend any?

I keep meaning to make a batch file to add to startup on my spare machine, because you need to do this each time you reboot..

The msn popup advert is a commen problem, it's original function was to alow admins to notify staff about issues such as network maintance etc....

But various advertising companies have started to abuse it. The windows XP firewall will block them. Mind you the windowsXP firewall normally causes me more problems than the popups do.

So.... get a proper firewall.

Yeah, strongly recommend the firewall. Use Sygate Personal Firewall which is pretty good. There's been a load of ping hunters recently. Notified various peeps and it turned out they were already tracking these guys, but were surprised they'd moved over to the UK! Still, Firewall = Good thing, ESPECIALLY if you have broadband. Just have to spend a while setting it up!

I also use GAIM rather than Messenger, all the clients in one!

Edit: WOW, things change quick with me. No more GAIM, I've with Mono and co on Trillian too! Weird trawling the archives seeing some of my more forgettable typings!

Trillian all the way... :)

my friend started getting these, it seems to use you MSN messenger port to get through (coupled with lower than default security) and firewall protection will stop them.

no, not msn messenger, the messaging service. the two are different.

You will almost never need to use the Messaging Service, so disable the Service as described above.

This won't effect MSN Messenger or pretty much anything else.

Firewall and resident virus killer is a must for Broadband, or anyone!
