Guest bit slow Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 hi to all on this fine day... i have a 256 mb card that i wish to be able to download programmes onto and then be able to access them through the phone. at present i cannot... someone said go to 'monoliths' site which i did.(excellent by the way) but did not really know which one to use to enable me to do this. please could someone guide me slowly to it :) :( the phone has now also been de-certed :D many thanks in advance.. bit slow
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Ok as you have decerted your phone then you need to get a file manager app, the best one to get is Smart Explorer (from mono's site)
Guest bit slow Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 ok back again i beleive i am a bit thick as well as slow... can you tell me where to down load it to? as when the download page comes up i don't really know where to save to or anything else for that matter... mmmmmmmm?mmmmm andy :?
Guest fozzie Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Try the first post in this thread. When it starts installing on the SPV, you will get a choice whether to install it to the Phone or the Storage Card - select Storage Card and away you go :) (The above is for installing programs that come as .cab files. If it is a standalone .exe then you will need to do something different. Is it .cab or .exe you are installing?)
Guest bit slow Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 cheers for the help.. it is the 'smart explorer' program as stated above for the best thing to download onto the phone to allow the smooth transition of programmes from storage card to phone!!! where do i save it to though? andy :?
Guest fozzie Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 So it is a .cab file then. Save the .zip file onto your PC. Extract the .cab file onto your PC. Then follow the instructions I posted before about copying the .cab file using ActiveSync onto the start menu on your SPV. Select (run) the .cab file from your Start Menu and the installer will start. Select 'Storage Card' as the install to location and all is done. Not sure what you mean by: to allow the smooth transition of programmes from storage card to phone Programmes are either installed to the Storage Card or the phone. You cannot move them between the two, without uninstalling and re-installing. If you are talking about moving files about such as .jpg & .wma, then SmartExplorer is what you need.
Guest bit slow Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 many thanks job now done.... advice totaly appreciated. bit slow (andy) :)
Guest fozzie Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Glad you got SmartExplorer installed ok :) Ultimately, it's up to you where you install the programs, although there are really only two choices - Phone or Storage Card. I recommend putting everything on the Storage Card (to keep as much memory free as possible on the Phone). Having said that, it may be worth you uninstalling SmartExplorer and installing it on the phone. Why? Because you may want to manipulate files between different SD cards using SmartExplorer, which would stop working if you took the card out that it was installed on! Quick word about directory structures: If you install an app to the Phone, it will go into: /IPSM/Program Files/[app name here] If you install it onto the Storage Card it goes into: /Storage Card/Program Files/[app name here] There are 3 different install procedures depending on what the source file is: .cab - this just needs copying to the SPV using ActiveSync and then running on the SPV. Most people (me included) recommend copying it to the Start Menu and then running it from there. Doing it this way means you don't need to navigate to it on the SPV with a file explorer before running it - you just select it on your Start Menu. (Tip - sometimes the file won't show on the Start Menu immediately - you can refresh the listing my going into a folder off the Start Menu and then coming back out). Once the app has been installed, a shortcut will have been created and the .cab file is automatically deleted. Standalone .exe - this is single file that has been designed to run on the SPV. Create a meaningful directory on the SPV under /Storage Card/Program Files (or /IPSM/Program Files if you want it on the phone)and then copy the .exe into that directory using ActiveSync. Then, create a shortcut to it (right click and select 'create shortcut'. Then cut and paste the shortcut into /IPSM/Windows/Start Menu (Tip - you can rename the shortcut if you want to, as long as it ends in .lnk. You can also rearrange items on the Menu by creating folders and sub folders and cut & pasting the shortcuts into them (you may need to refresh the Start Menu, as above, to see the changes initially. Installable .exe - this is a file that you can run on your PC that will setup the program and automatically copy the .cab onto the SPV (if it is currently connected through ActiveSync - if not, it will do it next time you connect your SPV) and then start the installation process. You then have the usual choice of selecting Phone or Storage Card and away you go. Hope this gets you further along the route to eternal SPV happiness - it can be a rough road but good fun nonetheless :( E&OE - but let please me know :D
Guest bit slow Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 many thanks for the info will let you know monday/tuesday, as away for the week end.. :)

Guest idss Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 HI just tried to install the above software this way Installable .exe - this is a file that you can run on your PC that will setup the program and automatically copy the .cab onto the SPV (if it is currently connected through ActiveSync - if not, it will do it next time you connect your SPV) and then start the installation process. You then have the usual choice of selecting Phone or Storage Card and away you go. but there is not enough memory on the phone, i have had this phone second hand and do not know what i can delete with out crashing the phone(e.g all the images seam to be on the phone and not the card). I also have a 128 MB card which i would like to use instead of the phones memory + a PC 6in1 card readed New to this phone so NEED help  Thanks in advance Ian
Guest Brody Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 try a hard reset, this will return the phone to its "out of the box" state. This'll leave the phone in a "new" state in a software sense!
Guest idss Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 will this remove all the gprs, email, internet setting ect... as took me a long time to get them working Regards Ian
Guest Brody Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Yeah it will unfortunately :) Not sure if theres a way to back them up... anyone??
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 It's best to start with a cleanhard reset as the phone's secondhand, at least that way you can then make sure all your installs go on your card. As for setting up internet etc if you have done it once, the next time it's easy :)
