Characters while writing sms and emails

Ive tried and tried and tried to figure this out myself but i cant -

basically when im writing an sms i NEED to use certain chracters like : ; () etc yet i cant find any way to get them up! Obviously on nokias u press the * key but nothing on the spv...and the ones u can get from pressing the 1 key are very very limited

this is my most serious gripe with the phone along with no character count so id love to know how to do it

did a search but couldnt find anything
