Guest Simon Desser Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 I know there are previous threads which this could be added to, but as this is the first time I've seen anything in writing from Orange, I felt it deserves a new topic. Surely this must put an end to all the speculation?Access Pack.jpg
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 For those who are on their mobile it says: "SPV pack The SPV pack, an introductory offer allowing access to all services for £6 per month, has not been available to new connections since the close of business on Wednesday, April 30, 2003. New SPV customers will be automatically provided with the GPRS Pay As You Use option, although they can opt to change to a chargeable bundle at any time. Customers on the SPV pack will be contacted and advised that they will remain on the promotion until their June bill date, when they will be switched to the 2MB GPRS bundle - unless they call to request otherwise. " Cheers Simon

Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 And now no smartphone coming on T-Mobile... P
Guest adam Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Wonder how many SPV users will wave bye bye to GPRS?
Guest adam Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Infact, how about a petition? Modaco must carry some weight with Orange!! Paul, do you want to change the world?
Guest martin Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 I don't think Orange know who there messing with. Paul, can you send the mods to pay orange a visit (if you know what I mean) Horses head anyone :)
Guest mike-oh Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Has anyone had ANY contact from orange with regards to GPRS useage? They were allegedly going to ring if you went over you 10mb limit weren't they? I average about 50Mb a month and i've heard sweet FA from them. Looks like the fun of GPRS is all over. Can anyone give a realistic amount as to how much it REALLY costs orange to send data, i bet it's a pitance. mike
Guest strathclydezero Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Orange did not provide that in writing for me with my May bill. If they don't let me know in advance I'll kick up some fuss.
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted May 15, 2003 Report Posted May 15, 2003 Orange - and the other Telcos - are committed to spend >£250m each per year just to pay for their G3 licenses. That's roughly DOUBLE what Orange are making as their total annual profit right now. Your suggestion is.... cut the price of G2.5 access, making it a BIGGER competitor to G3? Sounds reasonable. But be prepared to switch to another telco at short notice - anyone following your advice is going to go bankrupt even faster than they look like doing already. On the other hand, the management who make this decisions my have formed habits which they don't feel they want to break - like "going to the office", "cashing their paycheque". In which case, making G3 look better value than G2.5 might enable then to do so a little longer...
Guest rhaleuk Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 Surely for occasional surfing of SPV specific sites £15 a month should be enough (7MB) Most people know that the SPV is only good for viewing regular websites in emergencies. For MSN Mobile, Email and text news sites I think 7MB should be enough. I also think that the type of people who buy SPV's are also the type of people where £15 a month isnt that big a deal.
Guest Rob.P Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 ^ If you are throwing money around, throw some over here :)
Guest spacemonkey Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 petitions or complaining aren't going to change GPRS prices... the only thing that will, will be proper competition. When 3 is more established as a competitor then telcos will need to either have 3g available or 2.5g priced sensibly.
Guest hex Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 I must admit I'm gutted! Internet access is one of the major benefits of the SPV for me. I live on a boat and don't have a landline. When I signed up to the promotional package I'm sure there was something written about being transfered to a similar or cheaper priced package when it ended. I certainly can't afford even £15 a month on top of my call charges!
Guest lucky Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 Hiya all the price, is the price, is the price. Somebody recently did a comparison between the cost to buy a car and the cost to build it using parts bought directly from the manufacturer. The result, price new $35,000, price built not incl labour $255,000. Why, becuase it is what the market will bear. My suggestion is that all modaco users agree to terminate their GPRS plan on the same day and cite the same script to be recorded by the Orange CSR 'I am cancelling my GPRS plan because the price is excessive, and I was guaranteed a plan of equal or better value.' It almost certainly will not change their pricing but it will scare the hell out of orange marketing to get 2000 calls in one day all cancelling GPRS subs. Please can we get this organized, lets say the first monday in july as i understand the promo ends at the end of june.
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 I think Firaas has a copy of the original terms & conditions. But from memory, I think it was quite cleverly worded. But all I think it actually said, was that the package you would be transferred to, would cost you no more than the £6.00 package you were originally put on :?: Whilst it's a real shame, and the new tarriffs will probably prevent many of us using GPRS at all, I can't see that Orange have done anything that they didn't warn us about. (apart from giving us an extra month or two of the promotional pack) :?:
Guest lucky Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 Hmmm... I guess I went off at a bit of a tangent there. My point was not that Orange had done anything wrong. I am well aware of what orange stated, as i have kept all their promotional material regarding the pack from day one. So i have it in print. My point is that companies will charge what the market will bear based on competition and profit margin. ie they will run at a loss if it suits them, otherwise they will push up their profit margin until customers stop buying.
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 Lucky, i agree :) To be honest, your post wasn't even there yet when I wrote mine. It took me a few minutes to finish it and send it 'cos I'm at work, and I kept having to took to bloomin' customers
Guest mataus Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 I registered for a GPRS bundle yesterday (15/05/03) 3 months free and then start paying. I was told that I would receive a text which I had to delete and then turn off phone for 2 minutes. I am still waiting for the text, I have phoned Orange who said they have had a problem with the network which has delayed their text's being sent. How much longer do I have to wait.
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 I think the package you've just signed up for is only WAP :?: not full GPRS like the SPV promotion was. See this thread
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 16, 2003 Report Posted May 16, 2003 i've already told orange they can stick GPRS up their arse. (but i was more polite) Once they reduce to sensible prices I'll sign back up.
Guest drblow Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 ...I think it was quite cleverly worded. But all I think it actually said, was that the package you would be transferred to, would cost you no more than the £6.00 package you were originally put on :?: ... I can't see that Orange have done anything that they didn't warn us about. (apart from giving us an extra month or two of the promotional pack) :?: Yes, cleverly worded indeed! But at the end of the day, clever words or not - people understood the promo pack to be replaced by something of "equal or better VALUE". We are going onto a pricing structure which is lower in COST - but definately not in VALUE. Whether or not Orange have done anything wrong is not really an issue I don't think. For me it's more a case of it looks as if they are trying to rip me off - which I don't really like - and as a consumer the only realistic thing I can do is cancel my usage of it. I don't really expect Orange to give a toss- but at leastthey're not going to be ripping me off!! I think it's unfortunate that some people will end up just saying nothing and using gprs at these laughable prices coz if everybody stopped using it, then things probably would change!
