Guest Nigma Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Hi, Im just wondering weather people would be interested in using a TV Guide application on their phone? Before i start development, i just wanna get an idea of whats people opinion on this would be and any ideas you may have. Thanks Anand
Guest madu Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Hi Anand I'd say yes. Also I added a poll for your topic, if you wish you can always edit it (by hitting edit top right corner of your post.) Also, will move it into Software for more people to see (Development is not that popular with most visitors..#) Good luck
Guest ajb3000 Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 would this be anything like Digiguide? I use that a lot on my PC and it's very usefull!
Guest drblow Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 DEFINATELY!! Thats one of the most regular things I use my gprs for! & what with the impending "mass cancelation", I would love an app that does it for me! 1 question, would the app use gprs to download up to date info?? If so, personally I would pay for a small amount for this service (as I intend to cancel my gprs bundle). Great idea tho!!
Guest Gorskar Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 I think thats an app I would definite use. Try and make it as light as possible on the GPRS use though, with the upcoming end of unlimited GPRS we need to be very stingy how much is used. Of course even better if you could highlight the programs you want to watch, and then it gives you a reminder (or imputs a calender item) when it's time to watch it.
Guest James Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 cant use the poll option on my mobile but mind is a yes vote! would be great when i cant get to the tv to check
Guest amo Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Id definetly say yes, heres an idea... how about having a remindeer feature where you can pick the programs you want to watch and it reminds you when theyre on. Thatd be great! (Like what is on Sky Digital, shouldnt be too hard to implement either).
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Why bother with GPRS at all? Why can't the listings be downloaded throught the PC and sync'ed onto the phone? We probally all dock our phones on a daily basis, so it won't be an inconviennce, but will be a lot cheaper and faster.
Guest Gorskar Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 True true, I think that should definitely be an option!
Guest Nigma Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Brilliant!. Sounds like i will go ahead. I was thinking to avoid the use of gprs as Mr_Protozoa mentions. The TV listing files are roughly around 300-400k per day for a fair few channels. The idea is that when docked, it would download about 3-4 days worth of listings and put it on the sd card. That way you can browse without having to worry about using gprs. Thanks again for your help, Any more ideas will be very much appricated. Anand
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Why not add a search function to the app. You could search for individual programs e.g. "The Simpsons" Or you could search by genre "Sci-Fi" or "Movies" I agree a reminder function that intergrates with the calander would be sweet. What channels are you looking to impliment? BBC/ITV/4/5? Are you adding Sky/Cable channels too? If this app works it could be one of the most usefull things avalible!
Guest Nigma Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Yes, the search sounds like a good idea. As for channels, I will not actually be providing the content myself, as there are plenty of xml feeds available already. The XMLTV project (which is what i'll use), has a huge list of supported channels. TV listings from the following countires are available UK, Canada, USA, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. ALL of the TV stations in the UK are currently available (including satelite and cable). This is also proberbly the case for the other countries, but havn't looked into it (as im a brit). As there are so many channels, I will provide something in the program to only display the channels you select. Thanks Anand.
Guest MoRFLeZ Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 *drools* Now all you need to do, it team up with a Danish dude, and make one for Danish television as well *innocent blink*
Guest chocobogo Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 are you actually working on this app? will we need to use GPRS to keep it up to date?
Guest Brody Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 very interested! would improve the ntl guide!
Guest Nigma Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 I've just started development today. It will use the phones connection to the internet. So if it is connected to a PC it will use that. GPRS is not advisable, as i want it to download a few days listings and can easily get over a few MB for just a couple of days. Anand
Guest amo Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 great stuff! remember, im sure theres loadsa volunteers for beta testers (*cough*) :)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Sounds good, radiotimes.co.uk has their own, costly, pda version. I was hoping for a SmartPhone version to come up :)
Guest drblow Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 As there are so many channels, I will provide something in the program to only display the channels you select. Thanks Anand. Would this mean that you could choose to only download the channels you are interested in?? Thereby saving time DL'ing the data? This all sound excellent m8! I agree fully with the reminders function, and the search function. Bring it on!! :)
Guest nickcornaglia Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Do you have TV Guide in the UK? Here is the mobile site: http://wireless.tvguide.com/(1jbdl5eixfs4z...gnm)/index.aspx
Guest Nigma Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Do you have TV Guide in the UK? Here is the mobile site: http://wireless.tvguide.com/(1jbdl5eixfs4z...gnm)/index.aspx Orange offer a TV guide on there smartphone portal, but you are required to be connected when you view the listings. The idea behind this program is that a few days worth of listings can be retrieved and stored for later viewing. Anand
Guest nickcornaglia Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 No, I get it and like the idea of the program. Has a version or two of just that on my PocketPC awhile ago. I was just asking if you guys have the same "TV Guide" as we have out here. Is it an international company or just in the US? Nick
Guest amo Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 This programs gonna be great! Probably one of the most usefull apps that will become available, would be even better if a remote control software was launched in conjuntion with it! perfect combo :)
