There has been much comment as to whether the SPV is a phone or a PDA - most people seem to agree that the SPV is a phone with PDA capabilities, as opposed to the P800 which is a PDA with phone capabilities.

Personally I bought my SPV after carrying around a Nokia 8310 and Pocket PC for the past year or two. I liked the idea of one handed input, portability and connectivity etc. The fact of the matter is that the SPV can be a phone for those that want only a phone, BUT it has advanced PDA capabilities as well IF ONLY Orange would remove software certification and provide viewers for Word and Excel files amongst other things.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that many of us want increased PDA capabilities on our SPVs. No, we don't want to edit huge spreadsheets of write word documents but we want more. And we want increased applications, not just a plethora of games. Not all of us bought our SPVs for gaming alone! The SPV is a perfect device for example on which to enter financial transactions and expenses on the move, for later synchronisation with a desktop-based finance program.

Unless something is done about these restrictions soon, the SPV is going to lose ground to the likes of the P800 and other similar devices. It has so much potential....let's make the most of it!

No fair! I agree with you. That's an evil way to argue!

I agree originally the SPV was talked about as the phone that never needed replacing as it was upgradable, now this seems to a have faded away as we have only seen one update that doesn't really offer any true/real solutions that so many of us have been asking for.

Its all very well improving speed, battery life and adding fun software but this is expected by users as a standard.

When people ask for mutliple email accounts even 2 would be good or the ask for improved business software they expect it.

These are the fundemental basics of which the whole pocket pc market is based apon.

If you buy a phone that is marketed as a business tool you expect support and professional business themed upgrades/updates not what we have seen so far which is what should happe anyway.

If HP brought out a similar sized product tomorrow with the features of the SPV you know that if you brought it the support and service would be there for you as business user, you also know to expect big things from it like "update improved communications etc" as it stands the SPV is still new and I am in no-way saying that it is no good what I am saying is that Orange/HTC & Microsoft need to listen to customer feedback more and concentrate on improving an already popular product, not brining out another product that is of slight cosmetic difference and will suffer the same problems that their original product did.

If they improve the software of the product and input more time into delveloping that area they should not have to worry about bringing out a newly designed version just in case they lose sales.

Look at compaq, hp etc their pocket pc's are popular and sell even if a new one comes out the originals still sell because the person buying knows what to expect and knows they are going to get it.

I hope this makes sense and sorry for the length but its a point a beleive that needs to be answered as this point is the very future of the Smart Phone market.

Good argument, but remember, the SPV will be a small drop in the SmartPhone ocean. SPV might go tits up (Microsoft won't let Orange kill it, look what happend to Sendo), but the SmartPhone platform will win out. IMHO

Yes, the SmartPhone will win I'm sure, and I agree with all your comments vampyre.

But whilst developing "the perfect SmartPhone" don't forget those of us that paid good money to help get it off the ground.

Having used Psions for years, I am seriously tempted by Symbian products - Microsoft and Orange if you're checking this forum, then please take notice of our comments....

...if so you've got a winner. Otherwise you're going to lose a lot of loyal support.

what worries me is that Orange/Microsoft might really go brain dead and try to "fix" the "worrying" de-certification "problem". If this cripples future updates, who'd update?

As my learned colleague in another thread indicated, this is a solution without a problem. However, there are evidently a million other things that could do with being fixed ASAP, eg SMS counting, camera update etc etc.

I think the smartphone as a platform is sublime, but the way the SPV is being "supported" is likely to kill it. Much like XBOX, if people knew what you could do with a de-certified SPV, they'd fly off the shelf.

I can't see the powers that be changing their philosophy greatly in the near future, given that the spvX is going to be the "kiddies" version! so it looks like if we want to see word/excel, we'd better get programming.

But i for one would love to see convergence - i have an ipaq and it's nice to be able to play around with word/excel docs, even tho i don't do it often. if smartphone can do it, surely it's only to its advantage to make it do it?

it's not fair that great homebrewers are doing Orange's marketing for them, but with some of the apps out there, i'm sure these guys are responsible for shifting a large of number of what would otherwise "just" be a great phone. Because of their efforts we can do so much more.

I have to say I'm still reluctant to de-certify my phone - are my worries unfounded?

I have no gripe about the phone being locked to Orange but I believe software certification is fundamentally wrong and that it is this that is preventing more useful applications from being developed, for fear of the de-certification bug being addressed in the future and therefore rendering the software useless.

It is this and this alone that is holding this phone back. Orange might not realise the SPVs potential, but its users do, and I'm sure we would fill the glaring gaps or bugs in the available applications with or without Orange's help, if only we could.

I'm sure that I'm not alone in feeling that unless these issues are addressed, I will not be continuing my Orange contract beyond the twelve month period, or indeed buying from Orange again in the future.

If the next update stops your ability to de-certify then just don't apply it.

The ability to run freeware unsigned apps is one of the most important things I consider in this phone. I followed this forum for some time, and bought one about a day after certification was cracked.

I don't think it will be possible for orange to stop you reloading a decertified IPSM back onto your phone after an update anyway. They tried to with the latest DK update, but there is a way around this also.

personally, after a disasterous period with an Ericsson T39(gr8 phone) & a Palm M505 (flawed product & truely hopeless help desk) I'm looking to carry one unit that does what it says on the box. Cameras, MP3 etc are, for me, an extra that I'm not 2 bothered about-so quality etc, don't come into the equation.

What I do want is a phone/pda that allows me to access my inbox(yahoo) & when pushed, access sites such as multimap. @ the end of the day, would love SPV (or similar) to allow me to use with GPS & linked software, (gatso camera recognition-running out of points on my licence).

I am on road plenty, so battery life not a major consideratio, (run off cig lighter).

My main consideration is a product that I can rely on-(no hot sync failures) a good deal on monthly GPRS (24/7 coverage), Outlook sync, & a co (MS/ORANGE?) that listens to requests of customers, in terms of what I really want.

Am I heading down the wrong road?

Pablo, the SPV has great potential, but I reckon a GSM enabled Pocket PC sounds like your best bet.

The SPV is falling short at present on available applications and support.

All i can say before did the i de-cert i was going to send my spv back.......

after de-cert it was like a breath of fresh air.......freeware has kept the phone interesting and at the cuting edge. nes games, divx player who knows what next.............

my mate has just got his P800 to maybe replace his ipac and is quite happy but his jaw dropped when he saw matrix trailer on in divx format playing on my spv.....

This is new technology and the spv and phones like it when unlock by us or orange hopefully can atleast keep up with G3 or kill it off before it gets it feet of the ground....which i think is there biggest worry remember they collectivly need to get back 22billilon

Did you guys read that the t-mobile spvx is going to be de-certified, for now?

interesting thinking...

+ link added!

http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/449.html

..states: "_as of now_"

.. but t-mobile has always had a policy of sim unlocked phones anyway, right? it'd be a great precedant if they'd keep it de-certified.
