Guest Thurstan Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 I've had the thing where the phone resets itself again today. I've tried to unlock again using the Orange OTA service at www.developers.orange.com, but it hasn't worked. I've tried three times, and when I did it originally it worked straight away. My question is, now it has reset, will I need to reinstall things like Midnight's SpeedBoost and Speedytweaks, as all the installed stuff has disappeared from the 'Remove Programs' option? Other than this it doesn't really affect me (when and if I can finally unlock again) as all my stuff is installed to the SD card so I just need to copy over my backed-up Start Menu again.
Guest mrjuglas Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Yup, I'm afraid you'll have to reinstall everything you had on the system and all your settings - it all goes with a hard reset, annoying isn't it! Especially when it does it itself for no apparent reason...
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Especially when it does it itself for no apparent reason... A brief explanation for anyone who's wondering about these resets: The reason is simply registry corruption - it's how the registry gets corrupted that's not immediately apparent; here's one reason (and given that most of us are power-users, the most likely reason :)): *Every* time the registry is changed in any way, the whole thing gets written out to IPSM memory. This process ain't especially fast on the SPV, as I'm sure you could guess. Example: The "½ hard-reset" problem may well occur when the user installs a mass of new apps one after the other, which won't allow the previous registry modification to take place fully - which results in registry corruption. This is rarely immediately apparent to us, so we merrily go on installing and messing about with settings. The problem may not get worse, but the SPV has some kind of failsafe whereby the corrupted registry gets replaced from ROM upon the next power cycle - you may have noticed that the shutdown/startup process takes considerably longer before discovering that the phone has undergone one of these "system restore" events. It's not an ideal solution so we'll just have to hope that SP2003 is better in this area.
Guest caio1 Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 That's why we badly need a registry backup (or full backup) application asap!!! Caio
Guest caio1 Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Do you believe it or hope it? :) We need it badly! Caio
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 Believe it...one of the Action engine blokes (who wrote our current Orange Backup) has said there is a new version under development to give the kind of backup facilities you are asking for...
Guest Thurstan Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 As a post script to the half-reset: I tried to unlock OTA again but it wouldn't work (I have read that others have had similar probs) Then I did it from SPV browser and it worked fine. It could be something to do with the fact that you have to go online once for it to work (according to the instructions), and when it auto-resets it doesn't recognise the last time you connected *before* the reset... geddit?
