With Orneta Reader you can read files of any size. Currently supported format is: text files. The program is functional in trial version and runs in phones powered by MS Smartphone (unlocked phone needed, it is not signed yet, we expect to have it signed by June 2003).

Orneta Reader is code signed by GeoTrust and can run in any smartphone also in locked Orange SPV phones:

To download latest version of the program (with setup program for PC) click here. To download this program directly to your smartphone (as CAB file) go to mobile.orneta.com inside of your smartphone.

With Orneta Reader you easily find strings in the text. And the program highlights not one, but all words that have been found:

User can select any font size for reading eBooks. And while you change font size you can comfortably see the font in the preview:

2.gif

Orneta Reader offers "playback" feature, where the program automatically scrolls the text, without the need to touch the keypad! The first playback mode is "word by word" (user can define speed: number of words per minute) where program automatically scrolls through words:

3.gif

Another playback mode is "page by page" (user can define speed: number of seconds per page; please note progress bar to the right of the display), where program automatically scrolls through pages:

4.gif

Yet another playback mode is "line by line":

If you buy the program then you get:

- more than 4 positions in menu "Recent" (trial version supports only up to 4 positions, but you can open unlimited number of files through the built-in mini-explorer)

- ability to open and read files in PDF format; upgrades for registered users are for free (if you purchased a version without PDF support, just download latest vesion)

Some features of the program are:

- read files in formats: text and PDF (only text of the PDF, no graphics supported)

- while reading PDF files the text is being reflowed so that you can easily read these files, without the need for scrolling like it is in some PDF viewers

- showing of "Page xx of yy" can be switched on and off now (new in version 1.02)

- problems with some text being lost during reading pages resolved (new in version 1.02)

- some improvements in displaying of the text during playback (new in version 1.02)

- new mode in playback "line by line" - good for fast readers and very nice to use (new in version 1.01)

- during reading eBook/text just press 0 or 8 keys to call "Find next" function - in this way you can rapidly browse found places (new in version 1.01)

- read files of any size (no size limits)

- page by page viewing of the file, no scrollbars

- built-in mini file explorer, that remembers where you have been during file browsing - next time you want to open file the explorer opens the same directory and highlights the same file as last time

pagination in background - program is calculating page numbers while you can read the text at the same time

- menu position "Recent", that lists lately opened files and makes it possible to re-open them immediately without file browsing and without the need for re-pagination

- "Keep backlight on" feature, that allows you to read the text for longer time without a fear that the display will go off

- "Playback" feature, that allows you to read the text totally hands free - without the need to touch keypad (works well with "Keep backlight on"); 2 types of playback at this moment available: Page by Page and Word by Word

- comfortable, context sensitive, left-soft key: "Find next" in searching, "Pause/Resume" in playback and "Open" otherwise

- menu positions Find and Find next - the string, that has been found is highlighted - all occurances of it on the given page are highlighted, not just one

Cool, looks very nice indeed.

I'll have a play with it, and add it to the modaco catalogue when I'm not so sleepy.

Good work Orneta!

Hehe. So long awaited and no comments yet :) MoDaCo's been _very_ quiet lately.....

I don't really have any eBooks or large text files to properly test it... I've never gotten into that, so I really need to find some before I can comment.!

Some you do, others you don't. I've found a few through Google in the past.

You can find many free eBooks through Google: just go to www.google.com and type there "free ebooks".

In future we plan to add support also for other file formats, than pure text, so you will be able to use commercial (not free) eBooks in Orneta Reader.

Hi guys,

I had a chance to look at it today and its quite a good app.

One thing I was thinking would be nice is if you could rotate the text 90 degrees so you could hold your phone on its side. I think this would make it a bit easier to read the text if you had the extra length.

Also with the playback can you save the settings ? ( I really like this playback feature!)

Nice to have word by word, and page by page but how about a line by line option. Most people who speed read go line by line in the centre so if you had this option (and the 90 deg bit) you could really do some amazing speeds.

And lastly is there any way to turn off the "page x of x" bit as it takes up space and not needed when reading a fairly long file.

But overall I do like the app, and I'll give you some more serious feedback after I've tried it for a week.

What file formats are supported in the current version?

Only text files - anyway there are many eBooks available as pure text. See www.google.com and "free ebooks".

More formats in future but now we concentrate on comfortable reading features. On formats we will concentrate in June...

Does the demo version display a nag screen or does it expire after a certain time?

THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT.

The only limitation of trial version (now) is that user has 4 files in "Recent" sub-menu, not more.

In future non-trial versions will work more file formats, but using of text file format will be free always.

Thus you can use this application as freeware if you wish for unlimited time. If you need more positions in Recent submenu (now) or if you need more file formats (in future) then you can buy it.

Also: at this moment we cannot tell which formats will be supported in the future.

That sounds really fair  Okay, I'll give it a try and download it.

See version 1.01 - it has line by line that you requested and it is saving playback settings.

Line by line is good and makes it possible to read quickly and with pleasure:

Thank you very much for that guys :) I'll download and try again.

I had some more feedback for you (I'm really starting to like this reader).

- I notice that the page x of x actually covers the text some times. The only font size where I saw this was 15W 5H. I thought there was a mistake in my document but when I changed the font I could see the missing line. Not sure if this is a one off. But based on that it would be nice if the page number could be removable. And when its there normally it would be nice for it to be a different colour.

- With the speeds I was trying 360 words per minute and you can notice the whole screen refreshing with a refresh line on the screen. Its more obvious on the right of the screen because the black line on the left keeps getting breaks in it when its so fast and that can distract you from the reading.

- Other thing I notice was when I used the player word by word and it moved to the next page it becomes very hard to catch the text. So I will be reading at a certain very fast speed and then once it jumps page it feels quite jerky and I lose my place.

Possible way around this would to be somehow slow the speed if you are going to jump to the next page or your making the eye speed suddenly change and it loses the flow.

Other even better solution for this would be if you could somehow scroll the whole page instead of the blue block. Does that make sense. So in reality you would never have a page jump but instead the text would scroll but the blue block would stay in the centre of the screen always.

So that way instead of my eye doing

left to right (and back)

left to right

left to right

bottom corner to top corner (jump)

it would just do left to right all the time.

and I would have no jumps, and the reading experience would be smoother and faster. I think in theory the less my eyes needs to move the faster they can read. So having them focused on one word or line which is always in the same spot is better I think (big emphasis on the "I think").

Also I know some speed reader can happily read 2 lines at a time, so if you had the option to have 1, 2 or 3 central ones it may help.

I am actually surprised how fast I can read with your app. I thought I might get a headache trying to read page after page but its actually okay.

I have no idea how these suggestions will look in reality but I think they might be nice features.

I just tried 1.01 and that line by line update is very cool and makes it a lot lot easier to read even faster :) I'll try that for a few more days and see how it goes, but I think its my favourite out of the choices.

Thank you for all the feedback - we will take it into account in future.

We think, that 3rd playback mode - line by line - is already very good and makes you possible to read texts with big speeds. But of course there is always room for improvement and we will correct existing problems and think about extensions that you suggested too. Thanks a lot!

I find that if I use the "backlight on" feature, I can't turn it off? Even if I re-boot. I have to manually go into the power management settings and change them?

Just make one time "backlight on" and "v" will appear next to it. Then, after you finish reading or after you want to have backlight off simply go there and make "backlight on" again so that "v" will dissapear. So you have to press "backlight on" 2 times if you haven't pressed it before, to switch it off.

I agree that it is a bit confusing, so maybe we will change it to:

Menu / Misc / Backlight

and 2 submenus:

Keep on

Off

.. in the future.

Thanks, would it be possible to link turning the backlight off, with "Exit" . So simply exiting the program would automatically turn the backlight off again?

Thanks

Yes, we will do it in next version of the Orneta Reader, that is coming soon - it will have some corrections and improvements.

Brilliant app ! But..........

Sometimes it does not word wrap properly. I find that I get about 25-30 pages into a book and words start getting split between the end of one page and the beginning of the next. Sometimes it misses letters out of words between pages, sometimes it even misses entire words.

I have tried lots of different combinations of font sizes and widths but all yield the same results. Get this sorted and it will be my favourite app on the smartphone. 8)

We are aware of this problem and we are working on it. Rest assured!

If you would like to help us to debug this problem then please post here on modaco or sent to us by email: sample text file, description where the problem occurs and font settings at which the problem occurs!

In a couple of days these problems should be solved, and in June some fascinating file formats added.

Thanks guys.. Attached is the freeware E-book "Anti Grav unlimited"

font setting of 18 high and 7 wide and weight normal :-

End of page 45 reads :-

"So much for my theory glad-I-was-alive theory."

Beggining of page 46 SHOULD read :-

"But I could see why Nikki would be pretty torn up"

With this setting the "Bu" is missing of the first word and from that page on, pretty much every page starts halfway through a word and finishes halfway through a word.

Hope this helps guys. Looking forward to the new version. A commuters dream come true !
