Quick question

Just a quick question as no-one ever seems to give the same answer.

Basically, will PC games, sold in the US, work on an UK PC?

This question is for any game but mainly for older games like Indian Jones & the Last Crusade or Castles 2: Siege & Conquest etc.

There's a lot of 'discontinued' classic games on ebay but most are sold by people in the US & I don't wanna spend loadsa money on games that don't work?

They SHOULD work.

Some Win95 and later games might moan about your UK settings and a others might have weird keyboard mappings.

BUT, if you remember all the downloads that work, from US servers, I think we can say a US game should work.

If you still have problems, you should be able to get some basic support from the comanies anyway.

Yeah, US and foreign PSX, PS2, XBox, etc. usually have different hardware (Really, the UK PS1 used a completely different chipset originally!) and usually output NTSC, something a lot of our TV's (PAL) don't understand.

PC's don't have that problem (For reasons that are quite obvious).

PC software WILL be fine.

Although older games have known compatability issues with modern O/S's.

I recommend you check online for details before purchasing.

True. This is the first time (really) I heard about locale specific problems even though I played on PCs right in those times (DOS/W95) and they were on (believe it or not) Russian locale - that includes OS language and codepages etc...

The only problem is that most older games are either DOS or Windows95 and are very likely to have issues on NT based systems:

- Up to NT4 will not run (run correctly) MOST games.

- 2000 (NT5) is a tricky one, but is more likely to work.

- XP has more implementation for DOSbased apps, but will be a prob with some.

- 98(95) is the best gaming OS as far as I know, but having not used one for ages... 95 had a few advantages stability-wise and for older games, though will not work with new ones that use DirectX above 7/8.

One of the games I had a BIG problem with was NFS4: High Stakes - it would NOT for anything in the world run on NT. And that includes all of 'em! Still collecting dust on my shelf.

I only made the warning because some non-game software REFUSED point blank to run on my 98UK machine, namely MathCAD and Quark Xpress.

Even my knowledge of computers was unable to resolve it! :)
