Guest gav_jackson Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Hi, total noobie with a smart phone, i was mucking qabout with it, then saw there was this official update (UK customers - 1.3.5.6) so i downloaded it, installed it, it cocked up first time - juts hung, so i rebooted my PC, tried again, seemed fine, went through the erase and then the install went fine. but when i tried to boot up my phone (not connected to my pc) i get the sunset screen, then it all goes blank, the back light turns off, and if i hit a key, the screens white. i've tried a hard reset, but my menus only display option 8 "eraseIPSM" is this normal, cos 0-7 are blank. well that seems towork, cept my phone still doesnt boot up. whats going on :?: :?: :?: arrrrgghhh help cheers in advance
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Try the following steps: 1. re-download the update (in case your first download was corrupted). 2. *before* running the update, delete the Program FilesRUUCaClearJumpCode.exe file on your PC. 3. Having made sure that the charger is connected to the cradle and the SIM card's seated correctly, run the update again - it should work this time.
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 cheers chris for the speedy reply, i'll give it a go when i get home from work
Guest vijay555 Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 and the bootloader menu, the one where options 1-7 are blank, is normal. the other options gave you (in the past) the option to backup the IPSM (working memory store of the phone, registry etc), but now they've removed it. however, you can do the same thing with a program called usbterm. My phone always shuts down after the update, the first time (ie just gets to sunset, but not beyond. just remoev battery and try again) V
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 i've juts tried downloading and following your instructions; re-updating my phone, and it's done the same thing again - um, is it possible i've totally screwed my phone up on the first update attempt?
Guest madu Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 How long do you wait with that white screnn on?? It sometimes takes a *while*!
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 probably about 10 mins - first time i left it for an hour, should i be waiting longer?
Guest martin Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Have you attempted to download the update again ?
Guest madu Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Well, mine was bour 15 mins.. Very strange. I don't know what to say :) Orange are pretty good with replacements though...
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 yep, i've got a new copy of the update. i noticed in /program files/rcc theres a word doc with some trouble shooting tips, and one of the things it said was NOT to update through a USB hub, whoops. so i've unplugged my mouse and plugged in the cradle into the usb port at the back of my machine, but still no joy (after updating, i wait 8mins and my phone turned itself off). the docs said this would cause a communication error, would such an error have permanent effects on my device? ps. i really appreciate all the help
Guest martin Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 I've Killed two phones before (stuck at sunset screen) which even the software download failed to recover it. I had to restore WINCE from bootloader to get the phones back up and working. Scary
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 gav: you've tried the whole update process again without USB hub?
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 yeah im without usb hub and i've run through the whole process from the deleting of the file to the full update, still nothing. im on the phone to orange at the mo, they've not really told me anything new, just repeating the same steps and that think its gonna end in a replacement whats WINCE?
Guest vijay555 Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 windows compact/consumer edition - phone's Operating system try taking it into orange and tell them you tried to download the update and fried it. they have a ful backup on SD that they do for you while you wait. might be quicker than posting it off. V
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 well i called orange back, and they said that my phone needs replacing, but they're not gonna do it which is crap - so i need to go back to my mobile phone shop to sort it out! how lame is that? :@ anyway, i was wondering what might have caused this, cos i dont reckon my handset was faulty before the update, and i had been mucking about with it beforehand - i had installed a skin .hme file could this have somehow screwed things up? or maybe, im just REALLY unlucky :( oh well, i'm glad i got insurance, and (if/when) i get my new spv, im not sure if im going to bother updating the software again - as for unlocking the phone - yikes if an auto install update can cause this much hassel - although i wanna play doom :) not the best start for a noob (who likes to tinker with things)
Guest Gorskar Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 Unlocking the phone is no hastle at all now that orange can do it over the air for you. Simply go here and fill in the form! As to fixing your phone, I'd advise you do what someone else suggested, ie walk into an Orange shop, explain that your phone is trashed due to their update failing, and ask if they can restore the phones ROM from a backup for you.
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 just out of interest, is the update any good? i was interested in the performance enhancements and longer battery life (noticeable?) - the 2 extra apps im not too bothered about. am i being paranoid or could the reason my upgrade went so horribly wrong, be that my copy windows xp is dodgy?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 I doubt that was your reason for your problems. The update is writing infomation to your phone at the lowest possible software version, it can only take the smallest of glitches for a problem to occur and snowball. I have a legit version of XP and also had problems updating. I fixed it by rerunning the update again on another PC (my work one, also running XP Pro). Finally, the update is worth it, the phone becomes much more responsive, the battery life is extended and as a result its functionality is greatly increased.
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 well i went back to the link, and they are going to try and repair the phone, which is gonna take up to 4 weeks! i asked them to do the ROM wiping thing, and they said it would take 2 weeks?!?! oh well, looks like im gonna have to put off playing doom on my phone for a while :)
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 4 weeks? blimey. As mono mentioned, you should try the whole update process on another PC before taking your phone in to repair...
Guest gav_jackson Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 doh, i think its too late now, my girlfriend took my phone into the link shop just now :) , and i've spent my lunch break playing medal of honour on the company lap top. doh!
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 oh well, never mind. It's *very* rare that the SPV can actually get totalled because of an update - but it does take a lot of patience and time to put right; a bit daunting if you're not sure of what you're at. To be honest, first time an update went tits-up for me I thought "sod it, things can hardly get any worse" and just tried everything :) In the end there was nothing in particular that seemed to work, the update process just completed OK and that was that...
Guest Swift_gti Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 Hey guys, I'm thinking of putting the new Qtek update on my SPV but can't do a full backup as I only have an 8mb card, if it was to go tits up would Orange be able to tell what firmware I was trying to install, then they might refuse to sort it with one of their backup things ?!?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 The Qtek has a completely different bootscreen so yes they would be able to tell as soon as they try to start the phone up.
