Guest mww Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 My spv has just totally bombed for the first time in 7 months of happy ownership. Phone froze during active sync session. Turned it off as I have done in the past when this has happened and when I tried to turn it back on it stuck on the Orange sunset screen. Resorted to hard reset (first time I have had to do this) - followed instructons and having pressed the "record", "action" and "power" buttons the phone jumps through to the canary screen - pressing 8 here does nothing and when I power off and the phone goes back to the sunset screen and stays on that. What to do?
Guest Bundi1 Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 That's the same as what happened to mine. If i remember, i think i just did the reset again ?
Guest mww Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Yup - tried to reset several (lost count) times now and still same result. Hoping this is not as terminal as it is beginning to look.
Guest Bundi1 Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Hopefully someone more advanced will be along in a minute; I think that i was doing something wrong when i reset it the first couple of times and thats why it didn't work. But then i changed something and it worked. I'll try and remember ?!
Guest adamsweeting Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Do you have an SD card inserted ? - If not, try putting an SD card in the phone, and re-try the hard reset - When the SD card is in the phone, it takes a little longer to start up - and makes it a lot easier. When the white screen comes up saying "CARD FOUND" - press the action button then.
Guest mww Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Tried it with and without SD card - after white screen it jumps to the canary screen (3 colours) - press the power button, into sunset screen and then nowt.
Guest Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Try following these instructions. You have to be quite quick with holding the action button, its the same kind of thing as going into a PCs BIOS, if you're not quick enough or start pressing the key at the wrong time the phone ignores it and continues to the Canary screen. One thing to note - if you have done the UK Update ignore steps 10 and 11, when the phone says "PASSED" you can just reboot (or pull the battery).
Guest mww Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Thanks for that - followed instructions but the problem I am facing is that when I get to #6 I do not get the two options listed - the screen only comes up with "press any key to enter bootloader". Something not right there then! Slowly covering my desk with ripped out clumps of hair!!
Guest Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Hmmm... Got me stumped there! When I have had to do a _hard reset I am pretty sure that I got the option to "Press action button to enter diag mod". Sorry about that, anyone else know?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Despite the fact it doesn't prompt you, pressing and holding action will still take you into the bootloader. Try pressing and holding Record and Action, then powering on. Keep Record and Action both help until you enter the bootloader. As a last resort you could always try re-running your countries latest update.
Guest mww Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Nope - still no joy getting into bootloader. It takes me straight into the canary screen. So..................reinstalled the UK update. I now think that I am going backwards rapidly..........the phone will not power up at all now following the update. The final screen of the update "Upgrade 100% complete" is just about visible, popped the battery, left it for couple of minutes, tried to power up phone and all I get is a faint clicking sound but no movement on the screen or indication that the phone is trying to do anything. Starting to look as though I have an expensive paperweight!
Guest mww Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 For the sake of completion - thanks for your help guys but I eventually bowed to the inevitable and called Orange. They have diagnosed the phone as officially "shagged" and are sending a replacement tomorrow. Did not have Orange Care in place so have had to shell out £30 + £5/mth for the next 12 months to ensure it is replaced within 24 hours. Other option is to send it to Hays Technology for them to repair it under the warranty which could take as long as 14 days. No option then...........
Guest superkingdave Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 hi i had the same problem last night regarding bootloader. my phone was fubar'd(came up with a message on the home screen saying that there were no valid homsecreeens and the progrms soft key wouldnt do anything) i tried to reset last night and went straight to canary every time. I can in this mornig and was goinng to ask on modaco but i thought id check out the hard reset topic to see if it helped. i had to spend half an hour holding the action key but after my fingers were as red as fck i at last managed it at the 200 attempt. The fact that at the canary you can hold power and record button to return to the "card found" stage helps a little
