Guest jacoch Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Hi all. I'm pleased to let you know that SP Task Manager 1.1b1 has been released. It includes the following changes: - Menus have been reordered. - Added 'Page Up' and 'Page Down' functions to navigate the list. Thanks to madu for suggestion. - Action key now brings selected application to front. - A new function called 'Quit apps then TM' allows you to quit all non system apps. The function then close Task Manager. - A new shortcut, named 'SP TM Free Mem' has been added to Programs menu. It runs Task Manager, quits all non system apps and finally close Task Manager. At startup, a dialog allows you to cancel the function or run it immediately (see picture). This dialog is displayed for 10 seconds. - Wait cursor is displayed while refreshing the lists. - Added some shortucts: - 7, 9: Page Up / Page Down - *: Quit non system apps - #: Quit apps then TM As usual, you can download it here. [EDIT]Version beta 2[/EDIT] Fix a bug due to the installer. Free Mem was not finding Task Manager installation folder when installed on SD Card.
Guest MoRFLeZ Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Just when you think you cannot add anymore features to your awesome program, you go and do something like this!! Excellent!!!
Guest jacoch Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Just when you think you cannot add anymore features to your awesome program, you go and do something like this!! Excellent!!! Note that most of new features have been suggested by users on Modaco, Smartphony and by email. I was just a bit busy with Smart Explorer. So thanks to you for helping me improving my apps and sending your suggestions.
Guest jacoch Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 And don't miss madu tweak to map Task Manager or Free Mem app to VoiceRec button. I will add an option in next version to do it automatically (and restore default parameters when wanted).
Guest madu Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 WOW!!! That is so so gooood!! Thank you jacoch!! I have it mapped to VoiceRec  and now I don't need to switch to homescreen anymore when going from one app to another!! I can't imagine what the new SmartExplorer is gonna bring us :) As always top geezer you Jacoch!!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Nice work geting better all the time :)
Guest fozzie Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 - A new shortcut, named 'SP TM Free Mem' has been added to Programs menu. It runs http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=7065>Task Manager, quits all non system apps and finally close http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=7065>Task Manager. At startup, a dialog allows you to cancel the function or run it immediately (see picture). This dialog is displayed for 10 seconds. I've just installed the new version and this doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried running the app directly but no joy - nothing seems to happen at all? Any ideas please. Cheers.
Guest madu Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Jacoch, we have a little problem If you run regedit and browse to one of the sub-folders/keys then hit Home and open TaskMan you'll see that there's X regedit applications 'running'. Each one per sub-folder. If you select any of them (even the latest one) it goes back to regedit, but does nothing. Only back key works and it stays at same screen untill you exit regedit (going 1 folder up per each backkey press) :)
Guest jacoch Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Are you using PHM? I don't have this problem. Only 1 app is displayed. An app can appear several times if it reports several main windows (each window replies to message from EnumWindows). Usually, an app has only one window that reply to this message. If you select any of them (even the latest one) it goes back to regedit, but does nothing Sorry, it's not clear what you mean by "select any of them". You are trying to quit and TM does nothing except bring to front? Regarding TM, I have changed the applications that appear in the list. Previously, I was not displaying application that report them as disabled. Now, I keep them in the list because some games are always disabled when in the background. If it's not useful, I will revert to previous mode and try to filter known games.
Guest fozzie Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Jacoch, Any idea why I can't get 'SP TM Free Mem' to run? TM runs fine, as does 'Quit Apps then TM', but not the standalone app?! Cheers.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 yep same here when I select TM Free Mem nothing happens :?
Guest madu Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 SP TM FreeMem works a treat for me, starts, displays delay window and then either wait 10 secs or hit quit now and it works. Jacoch, I have tried to recreate the regedit problem with NO luck - lovely!! I don't know why that happened. Sorry.
Guest jacoch Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Should be a problem with installer. But I tried it and didn't get any trouble. Can someone having this problem check in registry if there is a value under 'HKCUSoftwareBinarysSPTaskMgr' named 'AppPath' and containing full path to Task Manager. Free Mem is a small exe that launch Task Manager with parameter -quit. Unfortunately, the CAB installer doesn't seem to support shortcuts pointing to target like "sptaskmgr.exe -quit" and using a custom icon. The strange thing is that most of MS shortcuts found under Programs use this syntax. And it's possible to create such shortcuts manually with a text editor. But I wanted to have the shortcut created during installation. And the only way I found is to create a small app doing this job. To find the path of Task Manager, it look in the registry.
Guest fozzie Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Fixed :) The registry entry was for IPSMProgram Files........... and it should have been Storage CardProgram Files...... Manually changed and all working now. For the record, I previously had Explorer in IPSM & Task Manager on the Storage Card. Installed the new version of TM over the top, selecting Storage Card as the location. One other small side effect of installing the new TM was that Explorer became 'de-registered' and so I had to re-enter my reg code.
Guest jacoch Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Seems to be one of these installer bugs. The shortcut is configured to point to %InstallDir%. This variable is replaced during installation by the right value. Unfortunately, it seems that it is always replaced by the default destination (ie IPSM). I will post a new version in some minutes and use another to get the installation folder. Thanks for the help.
Guest fozzie Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 No worries. Cheers for the excellent stuff you're doing :) (Now if only someone could come up with an app to make Line 1/Line 2 switching easier :( )
Guest jacoch Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 Fixed. Beta 2 available for download The only difference is the bug fix for the installation on the SD card. Thanks to all.
Guest madu Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 I just realised I do not like that SOFTkeys have been swapped. Is that really supposed to be like this Jacoch?? I am so used to 'Actions' baing on Soft2... Any particular reason for this??
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 Hopefully to match the SmartExplorer layout! :)
Guest madu Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 But then it should really have Quit/Kill/To front in 'Tools' (soft2) like SE has cut/copy. - something you perform to items in main window, and 'File' should have view settings etc... That would kinda make more sence or not?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 Don't look at me! hehe I've not had chance to install it yet. Although i may well be later on this evening due to the difficulties i've already discussed :)
Guest Simon Desser Posted May 25, 2003 Report Posted May 25, 2003 I have this version installed (on my phone, not SD Card) and I've just noticed that in the System Properties, it's giving a false reading of "free space" on my SD card. It's displaying 140mb free, but in reality, I only have 12mb? Any ideas? I'm sure it was correct with previous versions of SP Task Manager. Thanks Simon
Guest jacoch Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 I didn't change the way SD card free memory is reported. The function relies on the system API GetDiskFreeSpaceEx to get this size. So unless the system reports a bad size, I don't see how it could be wrong. But it wouldn't be the first bug in the SD card driver. Regarding the menus, we can talk about its layout for years. It's sure it's not a perfect layout. But I wanted to have something similar between SE and TM. So my idea was : everything that works with the content of the list (get to front, format or Rename, delete in SE) is in the File menu, everything that changes the view (or the selection for SE) is in the Tools menu. But Edit should be the right name and will be changed in next release (to match Edit menu in SE). But if most users think I'm wrong and it's not very useful, I will revert to hold layout.
Guest The PocketTV Team Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 To the SP Task Manager author: When you terminate Smartphone applications, make sure that you send the WM_CLOSE message to their main window and wait a reasonnable time to give applications a chance to terminate gracefully. Applications usually save their state and terminate gracefully when they get the WM_CLOSE message. We have heard that some task managers on the Pocket PC (bundled with some Toshiba devices) cause problems with some applications because they send the WM_DESTROY message instead of the WM_CLOSE message. This has been mentionned there: http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=63182 For example, PocketTV and PocketMVP (two popular Smartphone applications) will not restore the Backlight timeout if they are terminated violently during playback. Naturally, if the application has not terminated after a certain delay (say 10 seconds), it may be that the application is hung, in which case you can terminate it violently with TerminateProcess. Naturally, well written apps that implement correctly WM_HIBERNAME and do not use any resources when inactive don't need an Exit command and terminating them is completely useless. This is discussed here: http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...p=223576#223576 and here: http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=63182 (third post)
