What do you expect your SmartPhone to do?

I've been caught in a viscious circle with PDAs and phones and it seems that I am not really alone. I listed a history of my PDAs below. I'm constantly fluctuating on what I need. The full functionality of the PPC-Phone Editions or the simplicty of the Smartphone.

Convergence of my PDA and phone is a must. No more carrying around 2 devices.

I originally bought my SPV because I wanted alot of the functionality of my PPC but in a smaller size factor. And it is simpler! But that's not always good. There's software missing like mapping software, for example. I cant sync with Money. I cant even sync my notes. There is no Journal App. The task app is limited. You know all of the problems.

But I need to understand that this is not a PPC with phone functionality. It is a phone with PDA functionality. How much can I really expect it to do? When people want it to be a remote control or run Word/Excel, I kind of laugh and say why don't you just get a PPC Phone Edition?

But then again....

I thought my options were:

1) Get a PPC-Phone Edition again and deal with the larger size factor. Which I still may do.

2) Understand that the smartphone is limited and wait for it to grow-up, becoming more stable with more software availability.

But I realize that what I really want is a smartphone with ALL of the functionality of the PPC. Better yet...I want a PPC the size of my SPV. All of the functionality and speed with none of the size that comes along with it.

Someone...please make that for me and I will be happy!

HISTORY:

Palm Pilot Personal Edition

Basically, I loved my PalmPilot and used it in combo with various cell-phones. Simple.

Phillips Nino (Original PocketPC OS)

Moving forward, needing more power, the Nino was purchased. Very cool, but crashed every week! Bye Nino!

Handspring Visor

Expandable Palms!! Wow!

Handspring Prism

Color Expandable Palms! WOW!

Compaq iPaq 3600 Series

To Hell with Palm...PPCs rock again!

Compaq iPaq 3800 Series

Newer Bigger Better!

AudioVox Thera

I can throw my phone away....No I can't...this sucks!

Verpriced piece of crap!

Handspring Treo 270

Convergence! Email! The Simplicity of Palm Again!

Ooops...bad reception...I miss my PPC!

SonyEricsson T68m

Tired of my search...I went for simple!

Unfortunately too simple!

Compaq iPaq 3800 w/BlueTooth and T68m

Great...but I'm back to a 2 piece system again!

T-Mobile PPC Phone

Hooray! This is great....but look how BIG this is!

==========================================

Now we're in the present:

Orange SPV

Small! Powerful! Syncs with Outlook where the Outlook info on the phone is actually useful. Email, Internet, programs, games, music, video.

I want my phone to work, and since I ditched the SPV Ex00's it's done just that. Might sound trivial, but it's really not.

I think I agree with bits of what you're saying, particularly the "I want a PPCPE in the form factor of a C500" sort of thing.

For me PPCPE is too big. The iMate JAM is a distinct possibility (but then I discovered, just before I placed my order) that there's no WiFi.

I think we have to face facts - there is no "perfect" device.

I think, for the moment at least, that the I-mate JAM is your best bet...ok as mentioned above it hasn't got wi-fi but you can add that in with a sd card. Other than the wi-fi it seems to have the two most important things you need...very small formfactor but with all the functionalty of a PPC.

It's almost as small as an SPV C500

Errrm, the original post was in May 2003!

Things such as mapping (GPS) software, Notes etc, are readily available now :D

HA! Who dug up this old post??!!!

Anyway, if you look at my sig, I'm on my 7th Smartphone since then (had the Mio twice). And I also had a Samsung i700 PPCPE somewhere in there as well.

I must say that my prediction from two years ago is coming true and I hope to soon take advantage of it. PPCPEs have come down in size in a BIG way and when I can get one like the JAM or ETEN in the US running the 850MHz band...I'll probably move in that direction! :D

I'm unwittingly coming to realise, after all this time, that with the C500 I have finally found my 'almost' ideal phone.

I say this because for the first period in my entire mobile life, there is not another phone out there just now that I fell I desperately need to upgrade to (though the Jam has me interested).

But why I say 'almost' is because even now, after all this time, and mentioning it loads on here when the C500 first came out, I ABSOLUTELY miss a feature Nokias had - simple, easy, no hassle or messing, two way blue tooth note exchange.

I used to use this feature religously to send notes to my partner, while i was sitting upstairs etc.

Nowadays, it's so bloody faffy on the C500, that I just send a chargeable text instead, and that fact alone really sums it all up.

So, if ever there was a way to simply, and QUICKLY send bluetooth text notes back and forth, this would be a godsend to me, and make my C500 the perfect phone.

I find that owning a C500 and a Tablet PC (In my case the HP TC1100) covers all the needs I currently have and may want in a few years...It even replaced my laptop and cut out any need for a PPC.

Even if this is an old topic.

Is that an MPx300 in that photo?

Whats your review on that one compared to the rest, I'm thinking of getting one someday, to replace my MPx200, gonna give the 200 to my sis.

Its an MPx, not an MPx300. Also its not worth mentioning hardware-wise imho. Get yourself a JAM/MDA Compact instead, much cooler!

I was just wondering what the stats were and it's basic size compared to the MPX200, the reason I was interested is cause it's clamshell design and simple carryalong, and that it supposibly uses sdio instead of minisd

The MPX? Was about to say it's big, slow, and with far too little memory... then I looked at the picture and realised it doesn't look any bigger then the XDA2. Well... 2 out of 3 right 8)
