Guest fozzie Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 Is there any way to force Folders on the Start Menu to be listed before application shortcuts? Cheers.
Guest fozzie Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 Does that work on yours, because it doesn't on mine ?!
Guest Will Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 sorry that would change the order of the folders not put them first in the list? (maybe try making shortcuts to the folders?? and naming them 1_etc Will
Guest fozzie Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 You can't make shortcuts to folders......... :( Next idea? Edit: to be 100% accurate, you can make them with SmartExplorer and even display them on the Start Menu, but they don't work! Midniiiiiiiight ?? :)
Guest vijay555 Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 check out midnight's page, remove the hardcoded links to 1,2,3 etc from the registry, (Internet explorer etc etc), and hard code your own links to the folders? V
Guest fozzie Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 That doesn't work either. You can make say, a shortcut to My Documents appear at the top of the list, but it still fails ("Cant find..." error). Even if it did, this would only work for shortcuts in the root of the Start Menu - It would be no good for folders in folders :)
Guest madu Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftShetllStartMenu>Order: Tried entering folder name in this format?: Games That's the way it should be I reckon, but you should also try: Games Games Games OH SORRY!! I misread you post. You CANNOT link to folders because they are not associated in Windows to any program that could open a folder - since there's no generic explorer. :) I hope Jacoch would make it possible in SE to launch a folder from "command line parameter" - ie: "Program FilesSmartExplorersmartexplorer.exe" /L FolderPathAndNameHere Or reference it somehow in registry, so SE acts as default viewer for folders... Like .txt files get registered. Maybe use a different extension?
Guest fozzie Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 OH SORRY!! I misread you post. You did, but you actually answered something else that I hadn't yet asked :) The format for ordering folders in HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftShellStartMenu>Order is: Games (no '' - the last one in your list!) :( I don't think this info is on Midnight's site. I can't see though, any way to use this method to order shortcuts & folders in nested folders on the Start Menu. It would be really useful to be able to use shortcuts from the Start Menu to open folders.
Guest Saif Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 This is only really an issue if you are overly fussed about regularly changing your skins and home screen. Otherwise you can just move all of your links into folders, as I have and then - the tedious part- alter your skins to point to the right folders for your shortcuts... I just like things to be organised :)folders.jpg
Guest fozzie Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 This is only really an issue if you are overly fussed about regularly changing your skins and http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=714>home screen. I don't change my homescreen or skins. Like you, I have sorted my top level folders so that everything is on a single screen. I also then have folders inside these top level folders (I'm ultra organised!). These folders appear at the bottom of the list, after the application shortcuts. What I want to try and do is have the folders appear first and then the application shortcuts.
Guest Saif Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 ok.... heres an assumption: that the application shortcuts are only there so as to be used by your skins and not by you directly as you would put the application shortcuts into folders. what you could do is to use smart explorer and hide these application links and therefore you would only see the folders... you can keep copies of these in folders for your direct usage. this should solve your problem :) Saif.
Guest fozzie Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Sorry, I haven't a clue what you mean :?: I'm not using any skins. All I want to do is re-order my shortcuts and folders so that the folders appear first and then the shortcuts follow. We've established that you can do this for the root Start Menu folder by using the registry hack on Midnights page, as I posted earlier. This hack will not work for folders that are nested inside folders, under the main Start Menu folder.
Guest madu Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Indeed. But I can see this slowing down Programs menu :)
Guest Saif Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 hmmmmm can't help you beyond that I'm afraid... might just have to live with it... or stop having so many sub folders!!
Guest midnight Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 The standard order is Apps First, Folders last, as far as i'm aware, you cannot change this viewing order (except for the order tweak, when a folder is inside a folder if you know what i mean)
Guest fozzie Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 ok, thanks Midnight. I was hoping that there would be some tweak to re-order stuff that was in nested folders, but it seems not. BTW, did you pick up on the bit earlier in this thread, that your Registry tweak also works with folders? The entry in the Registry string just needs to be the folder's name. Might be useful to add this extra bit of info on your site :) Cheers.
Guest midnight Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 theres loads i need to add to my site, hence the reason for a completely brand new site, maybe get the site up tonight with any luck, design is finished, just gotta cut it all up and add all the content, then i can add all the new tweaks, skins, new game screenshots etc.
