Anyone used it yet?

This is the same version (1.3.7) as you can get over Orange Update.

The last digit (i.e. .8) is just the language code.

Something I forgot to mention in the original review.  

1 - The Tanager does not constantly buffer whilst playing streaming audio files.  

If the Tanager is the same phone with simply a better screen & keyboard than the SPV, is the Smart OS running more efficiently than the Orange version ?

I thought about backing up the registry and loading the Smart OS but didn't want to be the first to try it. :wink:

Anbody know any reason why this wouldn't work ?

I have no idea what this update does. Paul says it is the same update and the current Orange one. However, say if it wasn’t, could it be loaded onto the phone ?

Martin - My Eurotel phone (Tanager) is the same phone with a better screen & keyboard than the SPV and yes I think the OS has been tweaked somewhat and I think it is more stable and efficient that Orange's. Saying that, it is a whole different experience using the phone. Even though the tweaks are small it is a far far better product, period.

Dunno, but I would say yes. The upgrade download takes 20 mins so it must be a significant change.

- I does totally reset (hard way :) your IPSM

- it takes a while to load on first boot.

- Streaming? Not sure, but also not bothered.

- It is originally uncertified - whoo-hoo!!

- No point backing up registry, there's no use for that on SmartROM

!!! DO make a full backup. You will need to rollback when ROM1.5 comes out!!

- DO use Orange Backup to save all your contacts/appointments

- DO make sure you have all the software availible on your PC for re-install

- DO copy homescreens/sounds/favourites to PC, coz you'll be p***d off to loose those (trust me, I learned it the hard way) :(

- DO note all your GPRS/MMS settings coz they will be reset to SMART network defaults.

NOTE: If you get an error something like 'unknown device ID' then it is saying that your ROM is UK/DK/whatever version and will _not_ update.

SOLUTION: Boot device in Canary 3color screen and connect via cradle. It should show 'USB' in bottom left corner. Run update.

NOTE2: Orange Backup will become Action Backup and you'll need to change registry back to Orange servers:

HKCUSoftwareAction EngineAction Backup>Server> http://www.orangews.com/actionbackup

Do the same for Action Lock and Action Update. Only change the main server location ie: www.smart.com >> www.orangews.com , the rest of address (after "/") is the same!

VOILA! (I think that's all)

IF it is just the same as the orange update then it should be useful for our friends oversees who cant access the orange update for their keyboards.

PS: In fact, I had an image of full smart backup, so some things may not appply to the actual update, like totally resetting IPSM.. But I suggest you follow the guidelines anyway. And if you have backed up all to SD, then fear not..

the problem is full backup is something that can save your phone in case of a full screw-up... It has no use backing up contacts/files/other stuff because the only way to restore it is to write it back as it was whern you backed up. thus loosing all your changes made in meantime.

usually the updater will give you an option to back up (as soon as it is started button at the bottom), but that will not backup WINCE - that is what will make difference whan updating to 1.5UK - version of Windows not IPSM (WINCE can build IPSM from scratch)

But the directories I usually backup are:

IPSMApplication DataHome

IPSMApplication DataSounds

IPSMApplication DataProfiles

IPSMMy Documents

IPSMWindowsFavourites

IPSMWindowsStart Menu

mapaman, I would suggest you wait till Orange release their own update (hopefully very soon) since it is not such a big improvement from what you have now. Whereas the new Orange update is promising to have many fixes and some new features as well.

I've installed it and it works great (GPRS settings haven't changed and IPSM hasn't been wiped, just need to change the registry settings for Action Backup and Action Update). The only problem is I can't send SMS messages. Nothing happens when I click New either using the left softkey or using the menu. The only way I can send an SMS now is using Orneta Notepad.

Looks like I will be going back to the Orange Rom version.

In fact I had the New SMS problem when I updated SMART ROM to Orange and that was a nightmare...

Looks like the new software doesn't do anything new to the phone (apart from New SMS not working) until you do a hard reset.

Am I right in assuming that any Smartphone will take any major update then?

Ie - Eurotel Smartphone to new Orange 1.5 update (when available) etc etc

Or

Smart Amazing Phone to Orange 1.5 update or say Eurotel update when avaible??

I would think it is possible because the ROM is overwritten completely. I'd like a definitive answer on this one because I may upgrade my Eurotel phone to Orange 1.5 in the future.
