isn`t supposed to have GPRS online all the time even on these Smartphones? I have a Qtek 7070 (tanager) and I can`t get it to stay connected, it always dials and stuff everytime I want to fetch my mail or use the Messenger.

I had an Sony Ericsson P800 earlier, and there where no problems to stay online all the time..

please help

regards

What does it say in your Programs -> Settings > Data Connections -> Menu/Options dialog? Idle disconnect should be set to "None" if you want to stay connected to GPRS - either that or leave MSN Messenger running all the time, which'll keep the connection alive.

Alright! thanks for that one. It still seems to use the "Dialling" and "Connecting" though...but it seems faster in some strange way.

Placebo effect :) Seriously, it doesn't use "Dialing" and so-on all the time does it? Even using the above tips? It shouldn't...

it dials all the time, it even logs off just after it has loaded a webpage or something...frustrating :-)

I don't think "None" does keep the connection open indefinately...i have it on 10 mins and MSN is plenty enough to keep the connection open.

'Aways on' refers only to the GPRS packet switched network.

The dialling part actually sets up a connection to a required service. You are not connected to this service (ie internet) permanently as this will be disconnected after a period of inactivity either by the phone or the GPRS node, so it can free up the temporary IP address allocated to you. Remember that you are charged only for the amount of data transfered.

There should be a setting to stop the phone requesting the service disconnection instantly when detecting idle data transfer. In the SPV it is in data connections-options where the idle disconnect time can be set to x minutes (maximum 10 mins).

Quite right mate, it doesn't - but it's how I have mine set anyway because:

1. it damn well *should* keep the connection open.

2. I'm just a contrary strop-out merchant :)

Yeah I understand that the connection will drop, but it uses a great deal of time just to dial between me clicking on links on a webpage. It looks like it is dialing to the network each time in fact.

Try and find the 'idle disconnect after' setting and put it to maximum. :)

Yep, I vaguely remember we've been through this in a thread a couple of months back - and it turned out that Martin's suggestion worked. Don't know myself, I don't have this problem any more (my timeout's set to "None" and messenger keeps the connection alive)

I had this problem a while ago with gprs. My phone at first said 'dialling...' at every web page I visited. Shortly after that it started to say 'unable to place call...', and shortly after that Orange replaced my handset coz they couldn't figure it out!

Orange did say to me tho that gprs being always connected relates to the network (as Martin said) and that the 'dialling...' is required to connect your SPV to the gprs node at the beginning of a connection, but should only appear once unless you are disconnected for whatever reason.
