Guest ClintEastman Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 NEWSPAPERS HERE [uK]are reporting that our Minister of the Interior [Home secretary -Ed] will introduce compulsory identity cards this autumn and citizens will have to pay for the privilege. The Guardian says that David Blunkett MP will introduce the cards, which will also include biometric information, and every citizen will have to register to join the scheme. The cards will cost us £25 apiece, and will be called "entitlement cards". The reports do not say what will happen to individuals who refuse to register for the cards. The move is being heralded as a breakthrough to make our lives more secure. The government thinking here is that any refusenik obviously have something to hide. Surely everyone has something to hide? The scheme will be administered by the British Passport Office, which reports today that its server was down yesterday. Don't worry, your data is safe in their hands...
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 I've got no problem having a ID card - I've already got a load of photo cards and such like in my wallet. But I don't really want to pay 25 quid for it. That's 2 weeks food! If it's compulsery to have one - they should be free!
Guest Gorskar Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 I'm not convinced its a good idea... If it turns into cops stopping you in the street asking for your ID card if you look a little bit Asian, then its definately not to be touched with a bargepole.
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 If the govt are legislating to make these cards compulsory under law, there is NO WAY that individuals should foot the bill - what on earth is spunk it-blunkett thinking? Note the dressing up of the card - "entitlement" card - give me a break - Its an Identification card, pure and simple - in a few years time you will need to swipe it to use a public lavvie! I am not opposed outright to the card, but like everything else, the govt's methodology employed for implementation is seriously lacking... and so on... and on... and on...
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 Sounds like a hoax/misinformation.
Guest madu Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 As it happens you have to have ID on you pretty much at all times where I come from. And you MUST have your driving license while at the wheel... I don't think the actual "having ID" is a big deal, but the motives and the purpose of them doing it is v. questionable (just as most of the other things the buggers do..) My2p:
Guest Will Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 well seeing as the photocard driving license has your pic, and your date of birth, that looked to be the solution: but then they insist you carry the bit of paper around if you want to hire a car!! Will every country accept this as proof of id? (not for a long time). Will every shop/club/reception accept this (probably not). So we will end up with a wallet full of items with our id on, and carrying a passport about when abroad.. AND THEY SAY IDENTITY THEFT IS INCREASING... I wonder why? Will If the police stop you in the street and you produce this card will they think (oh he's not dodgy, we let him off) and on the flip side, they handcuff you and interrogate you as to why you don't have one?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 [13:50:06] a perfect use for a smartcard [13:50:15] that can easily be stolen and hacked [13:50:23] giving someone full details to assume your identify :)
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted May 23, 2003 Report Posted May 23, 2003 Well dodgy, 1984 and all that. Over here in Denmark I *have* to carry my visa on me at all times - if the filth stop me and I don't have it on me, I'm liable to be arrested and fined at least 500 DKK (plus the usual stuff from the cops, lead-filled rubber pipe, matress so the bruises don't show and so-on). On the subject of privacy: the minister of justice here, Lene Espersen, is pushing a "rocker-law" through, one that is designed, they say, to combat biker-criminality. This rocker-law will legitimize the cops hacking into peoples' PCs and installing trojan/backdoor software....a little more info here, here and here All in danish, I'm afraid, but google's translator will give you an idea what's going on...
Guest Rob.P Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 I wouldn't worry too much the ID card in the UK isn't going to happen for awhile and we certainly aren't going to have to pay for it, that's a fact.
Guest adam Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 ID cards? ID Cards??? I-D Cards???? (Garlic Bread) We'll have a President of Europe before that happens... :?
