Would like to let you guys know of a way of getting free ringtones. Some of you will probably already have realised this, but I dont think anyone has posted how to get them yet.

I'm sure all of you know of the sites you can buy ringtones from. Most of these sites sell them as midi's and most of which are polythonic. What you'll also notice though is that these sites allow you to preview the tones before you buy them - this is where the SPV comes in handy.

Most of the previews are either in mp3 or wav format. All you need to do is

- click on the preview link. this will open up a new window where it will play the ringtone using quicktime. On this new window, the url of the ringtone is displayed.

- using spv type in the url. the phone will then download the tone.

- if the tone is a wav, then you just have to save it to Sounds folder. If mp3, just upload to computer, convert to wav and voila!

I've have visted a number of sites doing this and it seems to work all the time. It's even better cause of the unlimited gprs. MOst of the tones are only about 100k for mp3 and around 300k for wavs. So far I've got quite a lot of my tones this way. They sound polyphonic but they're not. 8)

I haven't mentioned the sites in this post. Would the moderators would allow it? If so, i'll list a few of them.

Enjoy!

:)

why not just download wavs, they're free and all over the net?

Reason being that not all people want wavs cause they are nearly always samples of tunes or sound clips. At least with this method, if you wanted an actual midi sounding tone, you could have one. 8)

if i had the choice of either a proper tune or some half-arsed midi remake i know which i'd choose

anyhoo, midi files are all over the net, and theres plenty of software to convert those midi tunes to wav, better to do it on yer pc i reckon, otherwise you could run up quite a hefty gprs bill just for the sake of a ringtone or two

Totally agree, I love the WAV ringtones. Even if my ringtones do top 1MB its worth it just to see people's faces when real quality tunes comes out my pocket...

Currently sporting "so much love", though the Stone Roses before that did get a few respectful stares.

In ot got anything against using wavs. I use them myself. At moment I'm using the Imperial Star wars theme that was posted here last week. But like me and themes, I find myself getting bored or certain sounds after a while and changing them. I know that midi's arent the best or anything but it does give you that option if need be. Plus, it doesnt cost you anything while the gprs promotion is still on.

I've looked for midi convertors on web but cannot find any free ones. If you know where i can get any free ones it would be great. :)

Winamp has an option to output to a wav file, so you could use that.

I still think you're best off grabbing an mp3, converting it to a wav, and editing it down to a snappy loop or intro segment

yup, couldnt agree more, a nice LOUD (note to all wav creators out there) looping wav is the best way to go, made correctly they are easily the most impressive ringtones on any phone cos that little speaker can pump out quite a volume when it wants to.

no need to, it comes with winamp, go into the preferences, choose Output and select the Nullsoft Diskwriter Plugin, you can change the prefs of the pugin to sleect an output dir etc.

just remember, when you've finished to change the output back to your normal sound output

Don't forget there are literally millions of free MIDI files on the 'net, and with a little bit of work they can become ringtones. I've got a collection of a few thousand MIDIs I picked up in the days before Broadband and giant Hard Drives and they're OK for a bit of music. Why pay? :)

Goldwav is a top program and you can input straight from CD, pick the section of the song you want plus add fade in's and out's, quality.

Stone Roses - Love Spreads or waterfall intros sound pretty funky...

cooledit pro is the best tool for the job, has many filters to mess around with the sounds (including 'amplify' which is great to get yer tunes much louder), even includes a sequencer if you wanna make yer own tunes, i used it to create the keypad voices in the other thread, made the woman sound nice and robotic.

Have to agree 100% here with you mate as i also use Cool Edit Pro V2 and you can do some amazing stuff with sounds its untrue. Literally anything at all. I like to give my little sound loops a lift in the high/mid range end as this is the optimum frequency on the phone and it plays these ranges best. Shame the phone dont come with a bass enhance and decent speaker as you would be really made up with the sound then! ;)

Hey maybe in the future you could make the vibration part of the ringtone go in sync with whatever bassline the tune/clip you are using.

An idea for the talented on here maybe? :) :D

Cool, I'll have to try it, is it freeware?

Thanks,

hmmm, vibrate in time to ringtone is supposedly possible with midi, now, if we could get a blank midi to play (in other words vibration only), and get the wav ringtone to play, both at the same time, then possibly, unlikely tho i reckon.

Maybe this could be done by using a program to convert wav to midi.I know they exist but most of them you have to pay for. Anyone know of any freeware ones?

those wont work for the spv, cos it only supports the crappy midi0 standard, and will only use the tones built in for the midi playback
