Power Management difficulties...

Hi,

I know many people have posted problems about Power Management on the SPV, but having looked through the posts about these issues, I'm still left with a few questions.

I got my SPV the week before last, and from the word go the Power Management Settings have been unavailable to me, just giving the error that other people have described here. I know that doing a Hard Reset may solve this issue but it's a real hassle having to reinstall everything again.

Not having access to these settings wasn't too much of a big deal for me before, because I was happy with the default settings anyway, but over the last few days things seem to have changed bizarrely. A few days ago the phone stopped going into the screensaver mode where nothing is viewable onscreen, but would still turn off the backlight.

Then this afternoon, the backlight stopped turning off after a few seconds, and it now remains on permanently. I've turned the phone on and off many times, and there doesn't seem to be any applications running in memory that would keep it on - yet still it stays on.

How did these settings change themselves? Is there away of getting at all the settings that Power Management gives through the registry instead so I don't have to do a hard reset?

Hope someone can help.

Cheers,

Ben

Have you been running PocketMVP DivX player or Pocket TV? These two apps can permanently change settings. Also if the phone malfunctioned as you describe from the word go, you should have replaced it under the Orange 14 day trailll (assuming you got it new).

As it happens I've been running both of them. Which settings do they change, and how can I change them back?

I upgraded to the SPV, so the 14 day trial thing doesn't apply (although obviously if the phone is faulty, they would have to replace it).

As I say, I just wasn't too bothered about the Power Management settings not working until this happened. Not too late to get a replacement I guess, it's just a hassle.

They change them to whatever settings you choose (and back to default in PocketMVP's case i think).

It is of course probably possible to edit the registry each time you want to change these settings, certainly for the backlight. But you would have to do so after using the divx or mpeg players. As much of a hassle as it is, a hard reset should solve your problems.

Thanks for your help mate, I found the Backlight setting in the registry which was set to a very high value (presumably by PocketMPV or PocketTV), which I put down to a few seconds. That sorted things out for now, but I think you're right - a Hard Reset is on the cards - I'll need to do that shortly me thinks.

Thanks again,

Ben

Just a clarification here:

PocketTV cannot permanently change the phone settings unless you kill it violently while it is playing video. By "killing violently", we mean:

1) terminating the PocketTV process (while it is playing video) with TerminateProcess, i.e. without sending it a WM_CLOSE or WM_DESTROY message.

or

2) removing the battery while PocketTV is playing video.

Killing PocketTV violently while it is paused or inactive will not change the phone settings.

Turning the power OFF or using a task manager to terminate PocketTV will not change the phone settings.

If PocketTV is killed violently while is is playing video, it may leave the phone Power Management settings for the backlight timeout changed. In that casa you can use "Home Programs > Settings > Power Management" to reset the correct backlight timeout.
