SPV and DVDs - best software tools?

I have been searching through these forums but it is not clear on what the best tools are in order to get a DVD movie onto the SPV.

I understand that you have to first rip the movie off the DVD. But what is the best route from there?

I get the impression that there are two routes - 1) from the rip files, produce a DIVX to be used used by Pocket DivX Player on an unlocked SPV, or 2) from the rip files produce a video file format (not sure which) then use Windows Media Encoder V9 to produce a .wmv file that can be viewed on a locked SPV.

The Pocket DIVX Player seems to be a good solution because it can play movies rotated 90 degrees (so that you are maximising the SPV screen space).

So as you can see I have learned a bit from these forums :) , however ...

What I can't find out is the best tools to use for each option. I have installed GordianKnot, but I haven't quite figured out how best to use it.

Any ideas on any of the points I have made here? What are the best tools to use for unlocked phones (DIVX) and locked phones (wmv)?

Cheers
