Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Is it worth getting a card reader for my SD card :?: . Does it really speed up the transfer times up that much :?: . And where would be the cheapest place to get one from :?: . Thanks
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 I wanted one of the internal ones from www.scan.co.uk for 20 quid. P&P took it up to nearly 30 though :/ so i'll wait until i have other things to order from there methinks... On second thoughts i could start a pool and mass order some, then hand them out at the meet :)
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Yeah, i would like one of those internal ones but on a pocket money allowance of £5 a week it will be nearly six weeks until i can afford one ( plus i'm saving up for Xbox live :) )
Guest Richie M Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Do you guys have Computer Markets/Fairs near you? That where i get all my hardware, dirtcheap (usually Trade price + VAT) :)
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 I remember seeing a sign for a computer fair in Swansea somewhere just can't remember where it said it was, i think it was some hotel... Anyone live in Swansea who knows if there is a computer fair :?:
Guest Richie M Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Just checked with the people who organise the ones i go to, sorry David they don't cover Wales :) Anyway heres there link http://www.computermarkets.co.uk/ncmhome.html (I've been to loads in my area organised by different people; NCM are the best)
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Oh well i'll see how much they are on various websites. Thanks anyway RichieM
Guest ChrisJM Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 There was computer fair in the jarvis hotel  Chris
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Look on ebuyer.com they are only about £13 when I looked last.
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Thanks awarner £12 is cheap, does it speed up transfering files compared to doing it when the SD is in the phone :?:
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 They are much faster :) I use one every time I have a large file to move, or lots of small ones.
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 hhhmmm..might have to order one of those then :) Thanks for your help
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Here's a direct link for you here
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 I already found it ;p Thanks anyway
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 What's the difference in usb and usb 2.0, coz there is one reader just standard usb and one usb 2.0  :?:
Guest Richie M Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 USB 2 is newer and quicker, depends if your Motherboard supports it. If your unsure go for normal USB (1)
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Standard usb is nearly a tenner cheaper aswell
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 To put it very simply. USB2 is the newer standard, only just becoming mainstream. It's ment to be all singing and all dancing, better speed and power support. USB2 is ment to be backward compatable but if you only have USB 1 or 1.1 on your PC you may have problems, so it may be better to get the standard USB if you're not sure.
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 How can i check what usb my motherboard supports :?:
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 read the manual or go to the makers website. If your PC is more than 12-18 months old it will be unlikely, but you could get a USB2 card. but that would be more expense :)
Guest HelloDave Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Not a lot of point getting the USB 2.0 reader really; the maximum theoretical transfer rate of an SD card is 1.2mb/sec, which also happens to be (roughly) the maximum transfer rate of USB, so I don't think you'd notice much of a difference in performance between the two versions in this case. If you open device manager (in system properties) on your PC that should tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your USB ports. Unless it specifically says your ports are USB 2 they probably aren't.
Guest Gorskar Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 I like the scan internal one also. As its not too far from where I am I might just take the train and go and pick one up. I'm told the return train fare is only about £3.
Guest Vector Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 I might get the asus internal just for the sake of not having even more cables around my PC :)
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 External "Five in One" USB card reader (looks like an audio cassette, comes with a 1m USB extension cable) from www.scancom.co.uk for £15 including VAT and delivery. I should be getting commission from these guys! - but they do have a few excellent deals, particulalry in their "gone in 24" bargain basement department.
Guest abamara Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 I've got one of those! I seem to be having problems with the CF card bit. Still it's handy tho knowing you've got most storage media whipped! ;-)
