That's because the RetroSPV site is down, and had been for a couple of weeks or so. :)

Can you switch between RetroSPV and normal messaging? As it wouldn't be too good if you couldn't send SMSs for a few weeks in a row.

It was taken down a few weeks ago due to high costs, abuse and other problems. However we are going to get it back up and running soon, with a few improvements to both the software and the gateway.

Abuse, wouln't they have expected that from some people?

Why not charge a small service premium? An annual membership payment of £10 for example?

For the end user it would still be cheaper than sending sms, and would provide us with a reiable, working service. For RetroSPV it would stop abuse of the service and introduce a new source of (small) income.

Doesn't it cost them to provide this service for free?

It does cost to provide the service, we pay an amount for every single SMS sent. This is why it could not continue the way it was. When it comes back up, it should be more reliable and will have a few nice new features (mostly things people have asked if we could include).

Out of interest, how much does it cost you?

It will start up with a completely free trial for the first x number of users, then you will be given a choice of tariffs depending on how many SMS you want to send a month, one of which will be free. We will be offering the paid for service at pretty much what it will cost us to run it, which is considerably less than what Orange etc. charge. Full pricing details have not been finalised but will be posted here when they are. The service will also offer more options than the networks.

Note: the information above is preliminary and subject to change before release.

As long as you're one of the first x number. We will let everyone know in advance when the service will go live. Also remember that when the trial finishes, or if you aren't one of the first to sign up, you can still make a considerable saving on Oranges SMS rates.
