Guest gizmoy2k Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 Ok there are loads of posts about o2 GPRS/MMS settings flying around. Can someone answer these questions as it has become very confusing. 1. Can i use gprs to send/receive email & access messenger? 2. If not do i have to use "dial up WAP" to do the above?? 3. What is the point in GPRS if this is the case. 4. Why cant i get out of the O2 portal when i connect using gprs (ie wap.football365.com) 5. Do i need the o2 proxy settings?? I am using the settings listed below. I can send MMS aswell. Thanks for your help Gizmo O2 WAP settings for Contract. Guest SirOracle Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 Q1.2 & 3 You can use GPRS or WAP to send and recieve and MSN. The difference is GPRS you pay for the data recieved, whereas WAP you pay for the call for however long you are 'online'. You can also recieve and make calls if you are using GPRS whereas WAP you couldn't. As for your portal I have no idea what you mean. you are with O2 so that'll have to be your gateway. Thru that you can access whatever you like. If you had been using WAP you would need to change your 'Internet Connection' (in Data connections) to o2 GPRS.
Guest martin Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 This issue is about being able to receive (download) MMS as well as transmit MMS. It seems that attaching the MMS details to the GPRS WAP connection in MMS setup only allows you transmit MMS (from what I gather anyway). I've been playing around with my O2 pre-pay SIM and I can now send and receive MMS messages via APN payandgo.o2.co.uk. :) For some strange reason though when I download a picture, O2 has reduced its size. :? Your questions. 1. Can i use gprs to send/receive email & access messenger? You have APN mobile.o2.co.uk so the answer is YES. Otherwise you would have to mess arround trying to get the WAP versions. 2. If not do i have to use "dial up WAP" to do the above??not applicable - see question1. 3. What is the point in GPRS if this is the case.Faster data speeds and you only pay for amount of data transferred. 4. Why cant i get out of the O2 portal when i connect using gprs (ie wap.football365.com)Get out to where ? 5. Do i need the o2 proxy settings??You should already have set this up in data connections-proxys.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 Martin: some carriers (eg vodaphone) limit the filesize you can send over GPRS. Maybe O2 have similar limitations, however instead of rejecting the message they merely resize it (more intelligent imho).
Guest gizmoy2k Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 i only have mobile.o2.co.uk because you suggested it in the gprs/mms settings post Create GPRS connection Description: O2 GPRS mobile.o2.co.uk, web, password, 193.113.200.200, 193.113.200.201
Guest martin Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 Firstly, do i set this one for "connects to:internet"??? Yes, that right. Then make data connection 'Internet connection=O2 GPRS'. Thats all you shold need for HTTP web, messenger & email.
Guest gizmoy2k Posted May 26, 2003 Report Posted May 26, 2003 I forgot to report back. Using the mobile.o2.co.uk access point gives full access to all data (WAP, EMAIL, Internet, MSN etc.) and to the personalised Orange Portal. Access to this has to be requested from your service provider, they know it as a "O2 MobileWeb." Think i have to do this before i can get this all working. Will try tomorrow, thanks for your help

I am using an O2 PAYG sim so that could have some bearing on any limitations set. I wonder :? if when they activate MMS do they simply increase the allowed file size that can be received. I suppose the answer will be with contract users. Strange to see a 34K picture change to a minuture 3K version on download. MMS sent with a sound file was went OK but any pictures were scaled down. I'll try and send it to my e-mail address to prove whether the picture is scaled down on all MMS pictures sent or just those which are downloaded to the mobile. Cheers! :)
