Contacts Phone numbers!

I setup all my contacts up in Outlook and synced them to the SPV and they all have the +44 country code, My questions are this. Does the +44 need to be there? When i send a mms or sms in the to field it shows the number sent to and not the name of the person.

I really hope this is not me being stuiped.

All contacts have to be +44'd up with no extra spaces or characters.
