Guest Gazza Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 I cant believe that six months after the release of this phone we still dont have the ability to read an e-book (that you can save your place etc.) Or view, edit a word or excel doc (other than saving as HTML). Open attachments etc. Most of the software has been written by the users of this site!! I thought we were not far away from a release of such software! What happened?
Guest Simon Desser Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 You've got me thinking  Why the hell havn't Microsoft done a single thing since the release of Smartphone 2002. We "all" spend large amounts of money on Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel etc. Then we buy our SPV's and support Microsoft Smartphone 2002. Surely if Microsoft expect us to stick with the Smartphone platform, then THEY are the ones who should release some software for it, to be able to view/edit Word & Excel documents. I'm not asking for it to be free, but Symbian phones like the P800 can do it, so why the hell can't a Microsoft one? I get the feeling they've released a flawed, but potentially excellent OS, but just sit back and expect 3rd party vendors to fill in the gaps! :x
Guest Simon Desser Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 Sorry, I might be doing MS an injustice, they've probably just been waiting for their apps to be certified :) ;) :D
Guest richardmc Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003  It is strange especially as there are both pocket excel and pocket word files on the phone. They're buried in the windows folder. and can both be opened in PC word/excel but not on the phone, not even in word pad
Guest yatpeak Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 I agree, there should at least be a notepad, isn't that about the most common thing you use on your PC (either that or a better word processor, or unless you have a specific job where you use something else more etc. etc. etc.) ? Wyatt
Guest Pinnacle Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Wow, do I ever agree with the sentiments here. There should at the very least be Word and Excel viewers for this platform, with email attachment support as well. I've contacted the developers of popular Pocket PC Word and Excel application, TextMaker and PTab, about porting each to Smartphone OS. I think a lot of these guys need to hear that we'd be willing to pay for these apps.
Guest kpc Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 I would definitely pay for this software. That would make my SPV a complete platform. :)
Guest yatpeak Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Yeah, I suppose they're used to it being part of the OS. Wyatt
Guest abamara Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 I'll also be interested in Word and/or Excel viewers. I thought there was a hint that there were people working on it? :)
Guest Pinnacle Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 I got this response for z4soft, the developer of PTab (Excel viewer/editor) for the Pocket PC: We consider to develop a version of PTab for MS Smartphone, however no decision has been made yet. Thank you for your feedback. If you have questions of any kind feel free to contact us! Best regards, Petr Blaha, [email protected] Z4Soft, www.z4soft.com I'm sure some great 3rd party software for Office apps is on it's way in the near future...can't help but to think that.
Guest JimBob Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 A company called Cerience has developed some software to read all the document formats mentioned in this thread, here is an extract from an email I received from them........ As some of you have already guessed, this beta is for RepliGo. RepliGo will allow you to view virtually any document on your Smartphone, regardless of the document type. This includes Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.), PDF files, Web pages, CAD drawings, WordPerfect, eBooks, etc. This looks a really exciting project and just looking on handango I think I remember seeing the PPC version retailing for about $40. I would happily pay that much money if an application could read all those formats, hey, i'd pay that just for the ability to view PDFs as it would allow me to work while I am on the move and allow me to conduct research while I am away from my office. The Beta program is due to start soon and I have a little inkling that Monolithix is also a Beta tester judging by a post he made in the Software forum. No doubt he and I will provide you with a little bit of feedback as to how well the Beta of the application performs in reading the above document formats, but obviously it is not fair to pass judgement on the application until the Beta period ends. :)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Yep, all looks good :) And on that note i'm going to sneak this thread into Software (not sure why it hasn't before...)
