Guest Richie M Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 first problem i see is that you need to use orange's SMTP server smtp.orange.net are you able to send then? Will Beg to differ Will, I set my NTL mail account up not using O's SMTP :?
Guest J273 Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 They are the settings i am using with mail.btopenworld.com as incoming and smtp.orange.net as outgoing but i still keeps getting an error unable to connect to incoming server but do i have to make a new connection through settings-data connection dialing out to btopenworld or should i be dialing out using orange csd,Thanks
Guest Ron Jeremy Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 J, it appears that the problem is not actually with your SPV and the settings you are using. It seems that there is a problem with the mail.btinternet.com server, its not responding to pings. I think you're going to have to go down the unfortunate path of phoning BT customer services (gulp!) to see what is going.... ....let us know how you get on
Guest J273 Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 contacted bt waiting for a reply but as anybody actually managed to recieve email with their spv from bt openworld i used to be able to with my 7650
Guest J273 Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 Had an email from bt giving me the same settings that i have already got including connection settings,Should i make a new dial up connection connecting to their number as i am using to connect to my email the orange csd wap settings
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 Is your GPRS up and running correctly?
Guest J273 Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 No,Im on payg and dont wont to use gprs really
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 OK, well by default the phone is configured to use GPRS for e-mail, which would explain your errors. Try reconfiguring your data connections to use WAP instead. In settings go to data connections > menu > edit connections > GPRS connections > Orange GPRS > Connects to: WAP Network, access point "orangewap", everything else blank and pri/sec dns 0.0.0.0 (or the PAYG equivelent). Not sure if this will work but it should force your phone to use WAP for GPRS events. Let us know how you get on.
Guest J273 Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 Thanks guys for your help but i still keep getting unable to connect to incoming mail server please try again using mail.btopenworld.com but if i use the ip it says timed out waiting for a response from the server and i have just had a message from orange saying you have been billed for binary message by orange while i was trying to coonect. But should i be connecting via the btopenworlds number making a new connection or the orange csd number,Thanks
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 It sounds like your are using BT Openworld dial up for your conection to the internet, and not any of the Orange gateways... Have i missed something?
Guest J273 Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 That what i want to know should i be using the orange gateways to recieve my email from Btopenworld or should i be making a new dial up connection through connections with the number i use to recieve email with my computer.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 For receiving email over GPRS or WAP you need to be using the Orange gateways i believe.
Guest J273 Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 Just tried with the phone in the cradle to connect to email and IE sharing the internet connection with my computer and they both work fine so it cant be anything to do with the email settings but when i take it off of the cradle and try and connect to either both they both come up with the same error unable to place call
Guest Bazz Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 Most ISPs allow you to receive e-mail (from the pop3 or IMAP server) from ANY connection, but only allow you to send (SMTP server) from them if you are connected to them. This is to stop you sending out loads of spam e-mail using their servers if you are not logged in. When you connect on the PC you are probably using your PC's internet connection, whereas when you take it off you are using the Orange GPRS connection so you should use smtp.orange.net as your outgoing server. Also try clicking the "Server requires authentication" in Menu->Options->Sending
Guest J273 Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 Thanks for your help guys,Finally manged to set up email and internet by using o2 settings but only with my vodafone sim card when i try with my orange sim card it takes a long time to connect and then says unable to place call could it be that my orange sim card needs an update
Guest madu Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 So at which stage is there a problem exactly?? - Unable to place call - Unable to connect - Unable to receive - Unable to send - Unable to login As I see it, you need to play with connection settings and not email settings as it is. There is no 'network' limitation on incoming servers so that is not an issue. Since it connects ok via cradle - all email settings must be correct. It is to do with your connection and the way Inbox connects to the net. If inbox can only use HTTP (as opposed to WAP) connection, then there is an idea. Goto edit connections then to Proxy Connections. There is Orange WAP Proxy which seems to do the following: Connect from: The Internet (GPRS HTTP Connection) Connects to: WAP Network (WAP) Type: WAP (other options include HTTP) So how about creating a proxy that would do the opposite?? WAP Network > The Internet (HTTP) Thus providing a gateway for Inbox to use. Or best of all speak to Orange explaining that you actually do not have GPRS enabled and wanna receive emails - best way to go!
