Guest kingdom master Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 i know i shouldnt ask bout this here, but theres no good forum for p800. my mate lost his p800 and then got orange replacement. then found his old one again. orange charged him £50 for emergency care to get another. he then said i can pay £50 for his old p800 nothing wrong with it. and at the moment weve turn the phone onto flight mode so there is no gsm connection to stop them barring the phone. my question is, how do i get rid of the imei and lock to allow me to use the p800 with my orange sim without risk of orange kicking my arse or! blocking my sim or the phone. please help. thanks tom
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 Er... He's legally obliged to return the broken phone to Orange. There's no way round this i'm afraid... P
Guest kingdom master Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 thats not actually true cause all phones can have the imei deactivated. but i dunno how,lol while ur here paul whatever happened to the software i won at the modaco event i heard anything about it? thanks for your help though.:-)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 Dammit, i'll find out what happened. Changing the IMEI is illegal, and carries a pretty stiff penalty if I remember rightly! P
Guest kingdom master Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 cool, thanks mate i was waiting on three pieces of software i think one was my collegue that came with me, the other two were mine but u took my details for all of em. hopefully i can do somthing with the p800 but as its lost assumed stolen. wont they just block the phone. in theory flashing the unit would work right? but true it would be illegal so i might not bother. as i do prefer my spv and i would rather wait for a mitac.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 They will block it, changing the IMEI would be the only way round it. Normal flashing would not reset the IMEI. P
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 27, 2003 Report Posted May 27, 2003 If it's deavtived by a carrier the only way's round it are at the risk of ending up with a 5 year stay at her majesty's pleasure....sorry mate :)
Guest xanadu Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Changing the IMEI is illegal. I can't believe this forum even allows people to mention attempting it... At least everyone now knows that they will end up doing Porridge.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 He's had 4 warnings of the result of changing it, you'd have thought he would ahve taken a hint by now ;p
Guest h00pyfr00d Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Apparently it's also illegal to even own the software that enables IMEI changing, even if you're not using it, so beware.
Guest antz Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 I guess changing IMEI is illegal, but a lot of topics discussed on modaco forums have been naughty at best.. Like the original de-certification
Guest Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 There is a world of difference between IMEI changing and the original hack to de-cert handsets. Most of the reasons for wanting to change a handset's IMEI are for either fraud or because the handset is stolen. Most of the reasons for wanting to de-cert the SPV is to install cool software writen by people that either refuse or can't afford to pay for it to be officially certified by Orange. A major difference between something that Orange would prefer you not to do (therfore making it a teeny weeny bit naughty  ), and something that Her Majesty's Government says you can't do (making it downright illegal  ). (Is that the 6th or 7th mention of the legality of IMEI changing? )
