Guest dbiallos Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 Live in London, about to purchase the SPV from "The Link" this weekend. What should I do? Should I wait for the Orange SPVx to come out (comes out in April right???). The little joystick in the middle looks a little easier to use - or is it not an issue on the SPV? Comments & suggestions please...
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 Tha action button on the SPV is not its best feature. It takes getting used to, and even then, you can have a hard time hitting it without hitting an arrow key. Still, it doesn't drive me nuts, either. If you're confident that Orange won't miss the launch date, and can wait that long. Go ahead and wait... If not, is there not a period during which you can change your mind and take it back, in the UK? Just so you can play with it a bit first, and judge for yourself?
Guest MECX Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 ooo that would drive me nuts---i would want the new toy now but i hate it when stuff goes out of date :? personally i would wait for the tanager erm i mean spvx it just looks much better quality--the paint is coming off my spv in places abd the arrow key has moved---its gonna look real tatty before my contract is over
Guest Hax Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 You do get a 14 day (allegedly) no quibble period where you can return the phone (in immaculate condition mind you) for full refund, less the cost of the calls :) As for waiting for the SPVx - hell yeah! Apparently the whole keypad is much more comfortable (and easier) to use - with the keys being slightly more spaced-out (man!) and having a more tactile look to them. Also, Paul (founder of this site) states that the display on the SPVx is *much* better than that of an ordinary SPV. Only downside might be that O and MS could have closed all of the de-cert loopholes which could be a bit of a bugger! But then again they have removed the requirement for certification altogether! Personally, I'd wait a week or two (hopefully) and compare the two side-by-side. Although I can't see Orange continuing to market both phones once the SPVx is released, especially if the SPVx is better than the SPV! Although that said, they may have already ordered the components to make up 200,000 SPV's which will mean they'll continue to push both. Again, this is doubtful as it takes time to bring a new product to market and O would have been working on refining the SPV for quite some time and would have probably know that a better display would be ready for their use around about this time. The just pushed the SPV out quickly to try and get market share - IMHO ;) Hax
Guest stevewright Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 dbiallos - bear in mind orange prices are gonna go up by £47 as of 1/4/03. See: Telco price increases Personally, I played for ages in an Orange Shop with an SPV and found the keypad / action button genuinely impossible to use. I see no point in having a phone which has so many great functions if I can't get at them! Also Hax - from Orange.com press release "Orange will offer special SPV and SPVx retail packs which will include the phone and specific accessories or accessory discounts for different market segments."
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 I wouldn't wait, I'd get the SPV now, and the SPVx when Orange (finally!) release it. You NEED a SmartPhone today! :) P
Guest Hax Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 As for the two different packs, I can't see that lasting for too long. If consumers start to find that the SPVx does have a better keypad *and* screen then they will tend to choose it over the SPV, regardless of the package contents. After all, both packs will probably have the docking station, charger and handsfree kit included - what more would you want? The bluetooth headset that is mentioned as included with the business pack will only push the cost up even more! Plus, the SPVx will start to get better reviews from the press and those who have one - it won't be long until the SPV dies. All the accessories stated to be included in the packs will just push the cost up and equivalents could probably be found cheaper from 3rd party suppliers. Surprisingly, there is no mention made in the Press Release about the inclusion of talk time or data usage - that might have more of a sway between the two markets. As for O saying: The research indicates that the average SPV user is either a mobile business worker or early adopter, with a high use of email and synchronisation with their PC. Yes, some of us will be mobile business workers. But you can bet that most of us are just gadget-freaks who want the latest and will have very little business use for it. Most of the apps that have been written/ported are currently games or gaming platfors and "essential" utilities. Other than synchronising with Outlook and the access to e-mail, there's not much extra draw for the business user. No Word, Excel or any of the "mainstream" apps that the average business user would use on a day-to-day basis - and MS have even stated that they don't plan to convert Pocket Word/Excel to the smartphone platform. Personally, I think that the press release is just to try and quell the bad feelings of those SPV owners who feel like they've been treated as beta testers for both the hardware and the software only to find that Orange have had a better phone in the pipeline all along! Or is that just the cynic in me? Again, just my thoughts - time will tell :) Hax
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Well... to be honest, and even tho I fiddle with the phone quite a bit for someone who hasn't written a line of code in almost ten years, the only features of the phone that I REALLY use is contact/agenda sync... not even email, much. Certainly not for business (the phone'd chirp constantly :) ). So I'm not shocked by an Orange PR saying that most users (not most prolific posters on this forum ;) ) primarily use those two features and give up on the rest, just like others give up on downloadable ringtones in a few weeks even if it was a decision factor in selecting the phone in the first place. Neh?
Guest dan.peterson Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Same question here, After years with same s*** sony z5, am now debating between extra cost of new orange phones against adv of SPVx. Anyone know likely prices of SPVx without the subsidy reduction?
Guest yatpeak Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 Although I can't see Orange continuing to market both phones once the SPVx is released, especially if the SPVx is better than the SPV! I believe that they plan to sell them both, with the SPV as a 'business phone'. Wyatt
